The World Wide Web is known as the information super highway. With a click of the mouse, a person can find the perfect dress for a formal occasion or health advice, to determine if professional medical care is needed as soon as possible. Basically, if the web surfer can think of a topic, a product to buy, or an item to sell, he/she can find it on the web, with a few carefully selected keyword searches. The question is: where does all the information come from? Obviously, someone is writing articles for publication on the Internet. After all, the web is simply a means of disseminating information. The knowledge displayed has to come from someone. So, why does a person take time to write articles, and what is the compensation factor? The main reason for writing articles is to inform the reader. The message is generally to educate the public, a marketing tool, or both. First, the altruistic reason is to give the reader valuable information or advice. For example, a teacher may have web site articles to help students find educational material. Some schools may even have resources for parents and students to check grades, scheduled extra curricular activities, and academic dates.

An individual suffering from an illness may want to provide support and helpful information to others who feel sick and all alone. For example, the renowned Mayo Clinic has a medical site. Searchers can look up medications and find out information regarding the benefits and possible side effects. Also, an individual diagnosed with a chronic illness, such as diabetes, crohns, or heart disease, may want to locate a support group.

One of the most popular reasons people seek information on the Internet is interpersonal relationships. Cyber dating is on the rise. Entrepreneurs are essentially making big bucks by instituting a lonely-hearts club- a virtual matchmaking service. If an individual knows how to utilize a computer mouse, he/she can find the information and assistance for every aspect of life.

In addition to assistance, writing articles is also necessary to bring potential customers to an entrepreneur’s site-an individual selling a product or service. For example, a newsworthy, or even entertaining, article attracts the reader. Enticed, the viewer may decide to explore the well-placed links to see what the writer is all about. Since the article is generally related to the product or service presented on the site, writing articles brings in potential clients or customers.

The more site viewers reading the article, the greater the opportunity to garner a sale, and build a returning customer base. Simultaneously, writing articles can become a lucrative business for the writer, and the end result often brings revenue to the client. Therefore, writing articles is a win-win situation. Internet marketing is a steadily growing business.

Today, corporate executives are trading in the sixteen-hour day job, for a chance to earn a substantial income with an Internet enterprise, and still be able to spend time with the family. From the comfort of a living room or home office, a growing number of forward-thinking individuals have actually managed to realize a 6-figure income.

Likewise, on the other end of the spectrum, the individual writing articles, used to promote and link back to the business, can also work from the comforts of home and make a decent living without ever walking out the front door. Thus, writing articles can result in great jobs for frustrated executives, stay-at-home moms, and people with limiting disabilities. Great!

The option to work from home is great for many single parents who do not want to be away from their kids, or who cannot afford a babysitter. Writing articles is also an excellent way to earn extra money in the evenings or on the weekends.

In a perfect world, writing articles can promote a passion and earn an income. For example, some sites will pay an individual to write about a subject he/she actually lives every day. A person with diabetes can write articles to help fellow diabetics, and earn money at the same time. While a site may sell products diabetics need, the articles are also available to inform and encourage.

Even if an entrepreneur does not have the time or ability to write articles compelling the reader to take action, articles are available for rewriting, reprinting, and redistribution. In addition, to give a site fresh and original material, writers-for-hire are available. A good key word search will provide a plethora of writers or ghostwriters, who are willing to sell the ownership of the written word, and the businessperson can claim authorship.

So, if an individual has an important message to share, a product to promote, or a service to sell, a valuable tool for increasing readers and web traffic is article writers.

Which is the Safer Alternative, Dial-up or Broadband?

by Gregg Hall

Introduction:

A few months ago, I went through quite a dizzy with imperfect internet service.  My cable company was constantly on the blitz.  I found myself in a major service overhaul and re-wiring ambition, and darn near lost if after a month or so of service just deciding to ’shut down’.  The reason I had cable was an upgrade from dial-up, considered a luxury and loving it.

To date, the former cable company has not solved its problems.  I now have DSL, and am very happy.  In the long run, I will be paying less too. The below articles has interesting things to say about Broadband vs Dial-up.  Dial -up isn’t bad at all, but speed is speed.  Be aware of the cautions, mentioned below, you should take, and the rest, well, it is just a pure joy ride.  (MarginsXs)

Which is Safer………..

You’ve finally gone high speed with a cable modem or DSL and you love the speed. However, are you taking the right precautions to keep your computer safe? High speed broadband is a blessing. Remember the days when you could go make yourself a snack and go to the bathroom while you’re computer downloaded one page? That is no longer true when you have broadband service. Dial-up is limited by the bandwidth of phone lines and web content is getting larger and larger. The bandwidth for dial-up is not usually large enough to send large content file pages in a timely manner. There is new technology that allows you to speed up your dial-up connection. Both NetZero and EarthLink offer high-speed dial-up that are said to be five times faster than traditional service. You will also see advertised on the Internet, special programs to boost speed. As always with any program that you download from the Internet, you need to know the site you are on is secure. You don’t want to add Spyware or adware while adding the program to speed up your connection.I found as an early user of new cable Internet service that it was so much faster I was amazed at how fast my pages loaded. I was one of the first in the city to receive this new service. As more and more users jumped on the high-speed bandwagon, I noticed a slow down to my Internet service. The cable company has fixed that performance issue by adding new channels and splitting the users. This allows the speed, which we can easily get used to and like. How secure is broadband service? Broadband does have its advantages but there are also some dangers involved as well. First, when you are using dial-up, you are more than likely shutting your computer down when you are done surfing or working on the Internet. With your computer shut down, it won’t allow hackers or Spyware to get into your system. With broadband, their boast is “you are always connected.” I know this to be true; because when I turn my computer on in the morning, it stays on until I shut it down for the night.

While this is convenient, it also poses a danger by leaving your computer exposed to the work of hackers and Spyware all that time. With your computer “always on”, an important fact to remember is the road to the Internet is a two-way road and Spyware and hackers can be having a field day with your computer.

One such attack is called “denial of service” and has hit prominent sites like Excite at Home, eBay, and Yahoo. The Undernet, which supports the IRC chat network, has also been hit with this attack. Many experts warn that a particular worm can potentially cripple the Internet and could already have the worms seeded into many computers. They are afraid that these worms will be activated all at once and cause a massive failure of many Internet sites.

Hackers can get into computers that are serviced by these high-speed DSL and cable modem connections and are able to get personal information like credit card and bank account details. Many companies provide the first step in stopping these intruders by disabling the file-sharing program that is on the Windows operating system of their customer’s computers. This help prevents other users from seeing inside your computer.

Installing a firewall is another simple and inexpensive precaution. A firewall is just what it says. It builds a wall around your computer to keep hackers and Spyware from getting your personal information. Experts say that once your computer is compromised, sometimes the only cure is to reformat the hard drive. This is something that is time-consuming and frustrating and should be done only as a last resort.

Security issues with broadband connection will continue to grow as many more households start connecting with high-speed connectors. According to Nielsen/Net Ratings, broadband users increased by 134 percent in the past year. They report that nearly 29 million users are connected to a broadband connection in the year 2004. It’s mind boggling to think how many more have been added since then.

Enjoy your broadband speed and convenience, but prepare to take the right precautions to keep your computer safe.

MarginsXs Health Site: health diet fitness

Tonight I have the first sections of MarginsXs Health Site up and running. This has been a project long in the making. There are a lot of great articles and information out there for health and diet and fitness.

Almost too much…………………

How does one go about getting in and out of looking up an article without scrolling through a maze of print and ads?

Marginsxs Health Site

I created pages with one or two relevant topics. In one sentence, the reader can tell if the article is for them or not. Choices are to either 1. click and read more, or 2. click on another interesting topic of which there are five related articles to choose from. If you want to browse articles, you can by choose a topic page, such as Articles on Money Matters, and view a selection.

I’m pleased with the project, and I hope my readers get a lot out of this.

**Note: It seems like most of the articles are ‘for women’, but you dudes are in there too. The information strikes me as ‘for human beings’, such as good diet tips, recipes, and exerises.

Hope it helps,

Kathleen

A Glossary of Web Content: Terms All Writers Should Know

I found this article,  was very pleased to find someone has explained the different types of content.   Below details the different types of content that reign in the Content is King phrase.  In summary, contents are defined as  free, open content syndication, original, custom, creative, technical, user generated, destination generated, and spamdexing.  (marginsxs)

By: David Stockwell

Before launching into any enterprise, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the terms used in the field. For any producer of content, there are also legal and social issues to be aware of. The following is a glossary of the main forms of content found on the web. While not complete, all writers should be aware of the differences, the legal implications, and the effects of the various forms on reader reactions and search engine rankings.

Content - is defined as any form of information, here referring mainly to text, or text and images together that form a coherent work, referred to as an article.

Free content - is work legally usable without paying a fee, although legal restrictions may exist on modification, redistribution, and attribution.

Open content - is generally free, and may be redistributed provided it remains unaltered. The open content license (OC) also allows the charging of a fee for distribution services but not for the OC material itself. The OC license also allows modification providing attribution information, OC license and zero cost remain intact.

Content syndication - refers to the distribution of content to multiple Web sites through technologies as RSS, or catalogs of articles. The most common examples are the use of selective RSS news feeds to populate web pages with relevant daily changing updates.

Original content - refers to work that is significantly unlike any other work as to be regarded as ‘original’. For example, an original work would be expected to pass the plagiarism test at http://copyscape.com. Sources of original content include vast compendiums of online articles.

Custom content, in contrast to the above forms is paid for, and developed to the clients specifications. It should be original content, without the legal limitations of the above forms as it becomes owned by the client, may be attributed to him/her, and used in any way. A familiar example of custom content is ‘advertising copy’ describing products for sale.

Creative content - like custom content, is paid for and owned, but unlike advertising copy might engage an audience to provoke comment, controversy, and be read for recreational or educational purposes. For example, a blog post would generally be regarded as creative content. The number of comments received by a post could be an indication of the degree of creativity.

Technical Content - while being custom and original, would not generally be regarded as creative, consisting of such things as specification or requirements documents, legal documents, and objective accounts such as financial or scientific reports.

User-Generated Content - on sites such as Wikipedia, YouTube, Flickr, and MySpace have taken the web by storm, and now rank among the top ten fastest growing web brands. User-generated content has the advantages of being free, although the legal usages of the content are not clear.

Destination Content - is an example of industries with unique forms of content. One major example is travel industry destination content, information and media for potential travelers about their destination.

Generated Content - usually refers to html code that is generated automatically in the course of displaying documents. As such, it is convenient and saves typing html. However, generated content can also refer to text generated to bait search engines without real creative content.

Spamdexing - or search engine Spam, are web pages created or modified automatically and expressly to improve rank and attract search hits to a website. Spamdexing is generally regarded as dishonest, though not technically illegal. Wikipedia has quite a good glossary of terms and techniques related to deceitful search engine optimization techniques.

Conclusion:

Content must be original and creative to boost the search engine rankings over the long term. It must also be creative to engage users in a blog, and provide the feedback, contributions, and excitement that form the basis of respected, authority site. Ultimately, any shortcuts to search engine optimization that compromise creative quality will, sooner or later, be detected and the engine algorithms modified with drastic effect on your rankings.
