7 Basic Steps to E-Publishing
7 Basic Steps to E-Publishing by Derek Wood
Ok, first we will take a moment just to make sure that you know what an info-product is. Information products are basically a book, video, or audio clip that teaches someone else how to do something. This can be as small as a few pages, a ten minute video, or a week long audio seminar. It all depends on what information is being provided, and how much there is to learn.
Now that we know what an info product is, let’s talk about how to get started with creating your own products.
Step 1) You first need to know what it is that you know a lot about. Take a moment to think of several topics that you know well. Can you carve statues with a chainsaw? Are you an excellent poker player? Perhaps you have a method of saving money on daily household items that no one has heard of before. Anything that you can do, that other people might be interested in learning, or that will benefit them, if they can do it too is considered a great product.
Step 2) Now make a simply list of your topic and all the things that you know about that topic. The better your list, the more effective your writing process will be.
Step 3) Take a moment to organize your list into an outline based on categories. If you’re writing about carving with a chainsaw, you might have a list of which chainsaws to buy as one category, and 10 best types of wood to use as another.
Step 4) As with step 2, you will now list everything you know about each sub-category you listed. Again, try to be as detailed as you can. You will be providing these details to your readers.
Step 5) Ok, now you can get started writing what you already know. You have created a list of your main topic, several sub-topics, and hopefully some text about what you know about each topic. During this step you will simply expand on this by writing out a few paragraphs about your topics and sub-topics. Try to write from the heart, as if you were simply sharing the information with a friend. Do not worry at this point about grammar and structure; you will be able to correct any problems with that later.
Important notes for step 5. If you are not comfortable writing out your product yet, try breaking it down into sections. Take each topic and write a small stand-alone article about that topic. Then go back and do this for each topic. You can then combine your articles into one larger book.
You will basically use the same process for audio of video products, as these products will still need a list of topics to discuss. The only difference is that you will be talking, and if you wrote it all down, then at least you have a script to follow.
Step 6) Proofreading. This is an essential part of your product. Make sure that you take the time to read it, and re-read it for errors and context. If you are unsure, then consider having a friend or family member read it. No one likes to see errors in printed materials, especially if it was your own error.
Step 7) Now all you have left to do is to put it all together. You now have your product topics, some content, and it has been written and proofed. Now you need to get it published through a publisher, convert it to a PDF File, or record it as necessary.
That’s it. You’re done with the product creation process. Now that you’re done, you can move on to the hard work. Selling your product!

It doesn’t matter if you have a killer product or a fantastically designed website, if people don’t know that you exist, it doesn’t matter, and you are not going to make it big. Worse of all, you business could just get killed.
While there are so many methods and schemes used by so many e-commerce sites today, there are still some of those that can help you with an extra boost in the popularity ratings. One of these is the so called Viral Marketing.
While the term Viral easily depicts a virus, a word very much dreaded by all computer owners, it is not what it seems. You do not actually use a computer virus to spread your business; on the contrary it just might kill you. Everyone has had enough of all those pop up ads and spywares.
Viral Marketing Overview
Viral Marketing also known otherwise as Viral Advertising is a marketing technique used to build the public awareness of one’s product or company. They use many forms of media to reach out to the public without actually promoting the product by riding on in other forms of addictive means that could get a person hooked and be obliged or amused to actually pass it on, with the product or company advertisement along with it.
In a nutshell, companies ride on the idea that if people like the content of a media they will pass it on to their friends and family. They sponsor the certain media, such as a cool flash game, funny video, amusing story and such, which one may pass on to another with the company brand or logo or the products description or any other content to help promote the company or its product.
Viral marketing has become a popular means of advertising and marketing because they are relatively low cost. To avoid being tagged as spam mail, viral marketing counts on the eagerness of one person to pas on the product. If a person sees the name of the person they know as the sender, they won’t block it and open it as well.
Many companies offer incentives such as discounts and rebates when they help in spreading their viral marketing. They rely on the number of recipients a viral marketing gets from one person in determining the amount or number of incentive they can be attributed with.
Using Viral Marketing to your advantage
The main and foremost advantage of viral marketing is that you get a lot of publicity and public awareness about your site and your company. You get to generate a flow of traffic that are potential customers. With a little ingenuity and imagination, plus some incentives or prizes, you can reach out to a great number of people and announce your existence.
Most every site and companies are catching on to the effectivity of Viral Marketing and Advertising. Not using it could kill your business. Along with other schemes and methods in promoting your site, like Search Engine Optimization and such, viral marketing could easily push you ahead in the rating games.
Viral Marketing could be a sneaky way to get people to know about you and your company. You get them to pass your advertisement along. They are also very low cost that not investing in it could be downright a business suicide. All it takes is a great idea, a good addicting game, a funny story many ideas are still out there. Create a gossip or a buzz, many movies are promoted by using scandals and gossips to make them moiré popular. Remember the movie “The Blair Witch Project”?
Many big companies have tried viral marketing and have had many success stories with it. A classic example is Microsoft’s Hotmail. They were the first known big company to utilize the scheme and it has worked wonders for them.
Now it’s your turn to use viral marketing to work wonders for you. Act now and reap the benefits Viral Marketing will provide for you and your sales figures.

27 Quick Tips To Top Search Engine Rankings
See the below article for a very comprehensive look at Search Engine Optimization.
Last Update: Monday, July 30, 2007
In this article I show you how to improve your search engine rankings using 27 quick search engine optimization tips.
- Increase your site’s link popularity by increasing your internal and incoming links.
- Internal links - Cross link all your sites and important pages within each site. This will maximize the PageRank of all your pages within each web site.
- Incoming links that you control - Create several small web sites related to your main site. Each site should only consist of a few pages. Then cross link them all together using the most important keywords. Don’t forget to include links back to the main site.
- Incoming links that you don’t control:
- Ask sites that link to your competitors to link to your site. To find out which sites are linking to your competitors, visit a search engine and enter, “link:” followed by the competitors’ domain name.For example:
link:www.yourcompetitor.com - Exchange links with sites listed in the same category as yours in the major web directories, such as the Yahoo! Directory and the Open Directory.
- Find sites that accept site submissions. Visit your favorite search engine and search for:
"add url" "your keywords"Also try searching for the actual submission page using its page name.
For example:
addurl.html, addsite.html, addlink.html, etc.
- Ask sites that link to your competitors to link to your site. To find out which sites are linking to your competitors, visit a search engine and enter, “link:” followed by the competitors’ domain name.For example:
- Include a TITLE tag as the first META tag, directly after the HEAD tag.For example:
<HTML%26gt;
<HEAD%26gt;
<TITLE%26gt;Mike's Marketing Software Tools Reviews%26lt;/TITLE%26gt;
... - Try to avoid stop words in your TITLE tag. Stop words (a, an, and, but, he, her, his, i, in, it, of, on, or, she, the, etc.) are common words and characters ignored by some search engines to enhance the speed and relevancy of their search results.You’ll find a list of 297 commonly-used stop words ignored by most search engines in my Search Engine Optimization Guide; Search Engine Optimization Strategies: Top 30 Search Engine Optimization & Ranking Strategies For Dummies.
- Include a META DESCRIPTION tag, directly after the TITLE tag. Include the most important keyword phrase for the web page as close to the beginning of the description as possible.For example:
<HTML%26gt;
<HEAD%26gt;
<TITLE%26gt;Mike's Marketing Software Tools Reviews%26lt;/TITLE%26gt;
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Mike's Marketing Tools is the leading review site for the very best internet marketing tools for web marketers and webmasters.">
... - If you use a META REFRESH tag, make sure it is set to refresh after 30 seconds.
<META HTTP-EQUIV="refresh" CONTENT="30; URL=http://www.mikes-marketing-tools.com">Some search engines consider pages that refreshes under 30 seconds as spam. I recommend using a JavaScript redirect tag, if you require a quicker page refresh.
For example:
Step 1 - Paste this code into the HEAD section of your HTML document. Change the 3000 to whatever number you like. 1000 represents 1 (one) second.
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"><!--
function redirect () {setTimeout("change()",3000);}
function change () {window.location.href="http://www.mikes-marketing-tools.com" mce_href="http://www.mikes-marketing-tools.com";}
//--></SCRIPT%26gt;Step 2 - Insert the onLoad event handler into your BODY tag, so that the JavaScript code is executed when the page loads.
<BODY onLoad="redirect()"> - Remove all other meta tags (author, date, etc.), unless you’re sure they are absolutely necessary. The only meta tags I ever use are the META DESCRIPTION and occasionally the META REFRESH tag.
- Include a site map with links to all your pages. This will help search engines find and index all your pages.
- Limit the number of links on a web page to 50.
- If you have more than 50 links, limit your links to your most important pages.
- Include text on the page as some search engines, such as AltaVista, have been known to kick out links only pages.
- Use one or more header tags in your main page body and include your most important keyword phrase/s.
- Use large header tags, such as <H1%26gt; and <H2%26gt;.
- Use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to alter the appearance of the header tags to fit the look and feel of your site. For more information read this CSS tutorial.
- Check the first couple of lines of the first paragraph to see if it’s appropriate to be used as a description of your page. Many search engines utilize the first couple of sentences of the body text as the search results description, instead of the contents of the META DESCRIPTION tag.
- Try to achieve an overall keyword density of 1-2%. For more information on keyword density read my article, “How Keyword Density, Frequency, Prominence And Proximity Affects Search Engine Rankings.”
- Try to achieve a minimum word count of 300 and a maximum of 750 words on each page.
- Register a domain name with the exact keyword phrase you wish to target, using hyphens to separate the keywords.For example, if the keyword phrase is “search engine rankings,” then register:
search-engine-rankings.comIf the domain you want is unavailable, either try a different extension, such as .NET, .INFO, or .US, or add a keyword to the end (preferential) or beginning of the domain.
- Name directories after your keyword phrases, using hyphens or underscores to separate the keywords.For example, if an important keyword phrases is, “search engine rankings,” name your directory:
www.yoursite.com/search-engine-rankings/ or...
www.yoursite.com/search_engine_rankings/ - Name web pages after your most important keyword phrase. Separate the keywords using hyphens or underscores.For example, if the keyword phrase is “search engine rankings,” then name the page:
search-engine-rankings.html or...
search_engine_rankings.html - Name your graphic files after keyword phrases. Again, separate the keywords using hyphens or underscores.For example:
<IMG src="search-engines-rankings.gif" mce_src="search-engines-rankings.gif"> - Include an ALT (alternative text) atrribute in image tags. Include the most important keyword phrases.For example:
<IMG src="search-engines-rankings.gif" mce_src="search-engines-rankings.gif" ALT="search engine rankings."> - If you use an image map, include HTML links, as some search engines do not follow image map links. Plus image maps do not offer search engines any link text to index. So, try to avoid the use of image maps as they do not help with your search engine optimization efforts.
- Use the longer or plural version of a keyword, where possible. Word stemming is a concept used by some search engines to return search results that include keywords that extend beyond what you searched for.For example, a search with the keyword “engine” might return results for, “engines,” “engineers,” and “engineering.” If someone searches for the longer version of a word and your page only uses the short version, then your page will be excluded from the list of possible results.
- Sprinkle a few uncommon keywords and synonyms in your main body text. Less popular keywords have less competition in the search engines. So your web page is has a greater chance of being listed amongst the top results.
- Do not repeat keywords or keyword phrases over and over again on a web page, as this would be considered as spam by search engines.
- Keep your pages as close to the root domain as possible. Do not set up more than 3 directory levels.For example:
www.yoursite.com/index.html (1st level - excellent)
www.yoursite.com/html/index.html (2nd level - Good)
www.yoursite.com/html/marketing/index.html (3rd level - OK)
www.yoursite.com/html/marketing/search/index.html (Too many levels down - search engines will find it difficult to find and index pages this far down) - If you have a persistent (on most or all of your pages) navigation bar at the side of each page, your table is almost certainly set up in such a way that it pushes your page’s body text down the HTML document. Search engines give prominence to keywords nearer the beginning of a HTML document. So, design your HTML table so that the navigation bar is placed after your main body text.If you’re unsure how to do this, check out my Search Engine Optimization Strategies ebook. You’ll discover exactly how to design such a table in my book.
- Move Javascript code to a separate file, or the end of the HTML document after your closing BODY or HTML tag. Yes, this technique actually works!Follow these instructions to move the JavaScript code to a separate file and link to the file from the HTML document. Then place the following code in between the HEAD section:
<HEAD%26gt;
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" src="file-name.js" mce_src="file-name.js"></SCRIPT%26gt;
</HEAD%26gt;This procedure also reduces your file size, and therefore your download time. In addition, it allows you to reuse the code on other pages by simply link to the JavaScript file. Both of these techniques will move your important body text nearer to the top of the HTML document.
- Although not always practical, you may like to try naming your cascading style sheet tags after keywords.For example:
.search {
color: #ff0000;
} - Use Robots.txt files instead of Robots meta tags, as some search engine robots do not recognize the tag. Visit The Web Robots Pages for more information.
- Do not use font size one (1) text as the default text size. Many search engines consider tiny text to be spam. It’s OK to use some font size one text.
- Do not participate in link farms or link exchange programs. Search engines consider link farms and link exchange programs as spam, as they have only one purpose - to artificially inflate a site’s link popularity, by exchanging links with other participants.Do not confuse link farms and link exchange programs with reciprocal linking. Reciprocal linking is the exchange of links with individual sites, and is certainly an accepted technique for improving your site’s link popularity.

Write An Ebook as An Experiment
By: MarginsXs
Kathleen Krueger
Writing an ebook is a relatively easy thing to do, without a compiler, and even without a lot of word processing experience. Every-time I read a “How-To” on writing articles or an ebook, I’m reminded of all those writing exercises in my high school and English classes. I wasn’t intimated, I just groaned………a lot.
So why aren’t more folks writing ebooks? Why do I hear them getting all wound up thinking about it, but never really get it off the ground? I have found it goes something like this: the Idea is great (My Name in Lights), my ideas are ok (my family still loves me even they might not be), but (it’s over right about here) WHO out there wants to hear about it? Who would buy it? Who would find it valuable, and for sure, there is someone out there who is better and more knowledgeable than I. Where’s the money in it anyway?
AND besides, I don’t know how to start, what’s important, or what would be a good way of writing. WHO out there wants to go through it?
If you find this sounds like you, I encourage you to try this experiment. Write one anyway, and circulate for free, and see what results you get. There is a simple way of going about it.
Guideline one: Ask yourself some questions, and get focused on your goal.
-Does your ebook present (anyway you can get it on paper) useful information and is it current and up-to-date?
-Does is have the potential to positively affect the lives of the readers?
-Read Seth Godin’s blog article, “You Should Write an Ebook.” http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2007/03/you_should_writ.html
His post captures the basic concept that good ideas are worth spreading. And the benefits of circulating a good idea using something as viral as the WWW can be beyond calculation. The link “the simple details on how to do it” takes you to ten, free, steps. The mechanics of how to draft an ebook really is simple, and any mystic held about production should be dispelled.
Guideline two: Circulate it, and watch what happens. Overall, an ebook, this form of the written word, “brings attention to”. No one is going to give you much if your idea, or product, can’t or isn’t going to “bring attention to”. Practically speaking for a moment, you can always monetize your ebook, lets say with affiliate links and associations. Just remember, it is your idea that will bring people to those links.
So, simple! Give it a go!
As a note, I have to say, if you fail, this has to be one of the most graceful ways of failing. Your bad idea, attached to your good name, will most likely NOT be remembered. There is no need for shades, and no one will point you out on the streets. Low risk failure, everything to win.
Good writing!
