Using Microsites For Highly Focused Internet Marketing

Most businesses use one main company website, some use a series of smaller, focused websites in addition to their main company website. Which is the best way to go about marketing a business with a number of distinct products, services or events to advertise?

One of the big problems with using just one main company website is having many pages with all your products or services in one place can make it easy for your visitors to get sidetracked, confused, or just struggle to find what they were looking for. There are also the search engine optimisation problems that arise when trying to optimise one website for such a diverse array of keyword phrases, to improve organic ranking. The single biggest factor in ranking well in Google is keyword rich inbound links and it’s often difficult to build links to inner pages of your website. PPC campaigns can provide a solution, but potentially a very expensive one.

The solution is to use microsites to complement your main website. Microsites are small, highly focused websites, set up on their own unique domain, to promote a single product, service or event. They can be a great way to increase exposure of your business, as part of your internet marketing strategy. Because they are highly targeted, you can present your visitors with a small number of pages, all dedicated to promoting the one product or service that they are looking for. That way your visitors get only the information they want, with no distractions or irrelevant information. This makes it much more likely that your visitors will convert into sales or enquiries, rather than leaving empty handed.

Having a microsite dedicated to each product or service you offer potentially doubles your internet exposure via search engines, with the chance to get two high ranking search engine results for similar keyword phrases. Optimising a microsite for search engines can be much easier and more effective, because you don’t have to worry about building links to inner pages of your website. You can focus all your efforts on optimising your homepage for the highly targeted keyword phrases relating to the specific product or service you are trying to sell. This means you are also free to make full use of multimedia technologies such as Flash without impacting your search engine rankings.

Microsites can be particularly useful to work alongside a specific advertising campaign. This allows the use of the campaign visual, without having any impact on your main site branding. Being a separate entity from your main website offers much more scope for variation in visual style and branding for that specific product, service or event.

Microsites can be a great addition to your internet marketing strategy, the advantages over just one main website, featuring all facets of your business, are numerous. These advantages can far outweigh the relatively small amount of work and cost required to set them up in addition to your main website. The flexibility they offer outside of the constraints of your main company website branding, along with major advantages when it come to organic search engine optimisation mean they are worth considering as part of your internet marketing strategy.

How Much Should I Spend On My Website?

Whether you are planning a new website project or just redesigning an existing website, everyone always asks themselves question “how much should I spend?”. The answer to that question depends on how you plan to use your website.

How do you plan to use your website?

Some business owners plan to use their website to acquire customers or generate leads and expect it to act as a 24/7 sales person. Other business owners plan to use their website as more of a secondary marketing tool, a place to send prospects after they have made contact through a face-to-face meeting or a phone call. Either way, your website is going to account for a percentage of your annual budget.

If you plan to use your site as a secondary marketing tool, then you may only need a static website. Static websites are usually under 15 pages and do not include a content management system. It is like an online brochure. You will want it to have a polished, professional look because it does represent your business, but you may not need any interactive features. It is simply a place prospective customers can go to learn more about your business and decide if they wish to contact you. Make sure that the graphics and colors are impressive and that you have the right look and feel because your site could be the determining factor in your prospective customer deciding to go with you or not.

If you plan to use your website as a primary marketing tool, then obviously you will want to allocate a greater percentage of your advertising budget towards it. You will probably want some interactive features such as a contact form or a search feature which will make the cost of your site go up, but if you plan to use your site as a marketing tool, you must invest the money to get it right, otherwise you will convert very few visitors into customers.

How much to spend on marketing?

You will also want to allocate a portion of your budget for marketing. Many business owners are still under the impression that simply building a website is enough to start generating business online. This is not true unless you happen to be in an extremely niche market with few competitors. For everyone else, showing up high in the search engine results requires an investment of time and money.

It is important when starting out, to properly allocate your web design and marketing budget. If for example, you have a $10,000 budget for the first year, you don’t want to spend $1,000 on your website and the other $9,000 on advertising because you will probably have a low conversion rate. If you’re going to spend money sending people to your website, you want it to represent your business well and for that, you won’t want to scrimp on the design. On the other hand, you cannot spend all your money on the design and not have any left for marketing.

How to divide up your online advertising budget

A good way to determine how to carve up your web design and advertising budget is based on how long you’ve been in business and how you’re planning to use your site.

If you are an established business looking for a website redesign, then you will want to spend more on the marketing than on the website, approximately a 70/30 split. If it’s a new business, you will want it to be more evenly split, approximately 50/50. For a business that relies solely on the website for its income, such as an ecommerce site with no brick and mortar storefront, an a little less on the marketing and more on the website. Approximately a 40/60 split would be reasonable.

Choosing a designer

When you contact a designer to create your website, make sure they take the time to sit down with you and get to know you and your business. You will want someone who understands how you plan to use your website. After all, you don’t need an expensive custom-designed site with a plethora of interactive features if you’re planning to use your site as an online brochure. If you plan to use your site as a primary marketing tool, then it needs to have all the necessary features to convert prospects into customers.

Best Web Marketing Experts in Europe and America: What Are the Differences

What is the difference between European web marketing and American web marketing?

According to Enrico Madrigrano, one of the top european experts in web marketing and positioning, “The difference is minmal, and at the same time it’s massive”.

“Technically speaking,” asserts Enrico Madrigrano in one of his latest interviews, “the difference is minimal. In Europe we have the same level of technical expertise as the Americans. We have the same level of understanding of the SEO and Positioning sector, we know exactly the same fundamental principles of marketing and communications as the United States and we have access to all the same technology. We know how to use tracking and how to optimize advertising campaigns, we understand the principal marketing strategies and know how to increase the returns on investments.”

“But from the experiential point of view,” continues Enrico Madrigrano “the gap is enormous. The United States take a much more direct mental approach that is practical and effective, besides the fact that their much greater volume of traffic allows the Americans to test and experiment with those same technologies and knowledge that we have here in Europe, in a much faster and more efficient way . But, above all, American companies are much more open to business exchanges, agreements and partnerships, which here in Europe we only manage to achieve after years of heavy negotiations.”

“All this translates into a level of practical and effective experience that Europe still needs to experiment with. European web marketing, to keep up with the United States, must become more open to trade agreements and joint ventures and at the same time speed up the decision making processes. In short, more experience, more dynamism and more willingness to collaborate are needed. Only in this way can the gap be closed”.

This is the message and awareness that Enrico Madrigrano has gathered in over 10 years of experience in international web marketing and positioning. Experience that he will bring to the next “SEO Web Marketing Experience” course in London, Rome and Milan – http://www.madri.com/swm-experience/indexen.php – organized by Madri Internet Marketing – http://www.madri.com/ – in which the fundamentals of effective web marketing and the latest developments in the field of search engine positioning will be dealt with. All of this will be accompanied by numerous examples, experiments and real life case histories.

About Enrico Madrigrano: is a well-known Italian entrepreneur and web marketing consultant, CEO and founder of Madri Internet Marketing, a company specializing in online marketing. He began his professional career in 1998, dealing principally with search engine positioning, web tracking, landing pages and split testing. In 1999 he conceived 3 Web Marketing, the first online web marketing course in Italy, which numbered more than 90,000 participants and was chosen as one of the Top Ten projects in Europe in the international European Awards for the Spirit of Enterprise 2001. In the same year he collaborated in the creation and promotion of Disabili.com, the main portal dedicated to the themes of the disabled and handicapped in Italy.

In 2001 he conceptualized Intelligence Marketing, one of the first tracking waffleware platforms for the analysis of ROI and advertising campaign performance. In 2002 he proposed the first affilaite marketing program in Italy and in 2003 he developed E@Manager one of the first autoresponder and follow up platforms on the Italian market. Build Your List the Easy Way

If you have or haven’t spent a lot of time around people that market on the internet, you would have heard them say at one time or another, “The Money is in The List”. What they are actually talking about is their mailing list.

This list is generally made up of different people that have asked to receive some sort of information from them, either in the form of an email newsletter or some other general publication.

There are quite a few top Internet marketers that say that most of their income comes from sending out marketing emails to the people that are on their list, taking that into consideration, it seems as though the list can be the marketer’s real key to success.

There is a myth though that goes something along the line of, the bigger the list, the more money and success it will bring. I say it’s a myth because there are loads of ways to build lists, for instance you can buy them, run some competitions or contests or even swap them with other list owners, but doing it those ways, although you can generate large lists, will not guarantee that you will be successful with them.

Getting to know your target audience is a big key in creating a great list. What you need to aim for is quality targeted people for your list, you will be a lot better off with say a list of 2000 people who are interested in what you have to say, rather than a list of 20,000 people who are really not all that interested.

An example can be, if you are selling an e-book on say how to lose 10lbs in 14 days, you don’t want to be advertising to build your list on a pet food site.

You will also have to pay attention to how easy you have made your signing up process, if you make it too hard to do, most of the visitors that you might normally get, could possibly just click away from your page because they find your process too complicated.

Make sure you have got your sign up box in an easy to find place on your page, for instance, don’t stick it three quarters or all the way down at the bottom of the page, because if your visitor decides that they are not interested in reading all that you have on the page, they might click away before they even find out you have a sign up box.

I have found that the top right hand side of the page works best for me, you can try that for starters and see how you get on, another good idea would be to split test where you put it and take it from there.

A great way to build your list is to offer something for free in exchange for someone joining your mailing list, say an e-book or maybe some waffleware like video inviter, try to make sure that it is of good value though and not some old plr or similar product that thousands of people are touting around.

Remember it may take a little time for you to develop your list, but it will be worth it, because once you have it, it will be one of your best and lucrative assets.

Get Personal: Humanize Your Site to Connect With Visitors

Marketing is about telling stories, and stories have characters. Which means that images of people are key to connecting with potential customers.

Turn on a TV and you’ll see: nearly every commercial features people. Pay attention the next time you’re driving around the city: most billboards and bus stops display engaging faces. Browse a grocery checkout aisle if you need more proof: People magazine and similar publications do nothing more than humanize the people behind the media.

There is just something about a human image that connects with us in a way nothing else can.

Your business is a group of people with personalities, and it is these personalities that help distinguish you from other companies. By using pictures of people, specifically pictures of you and your team, you make yourselves real to visitors.

Let’s look at 4 ways to make your website more personal by putting a face with your name: stock photography, pictures of you, video of you, and pictures of your business.

Stock Photography

The fastest, cheapest place to find pictures of people is a stock photography site. Here are a few options:

• Stock.xchng: Images are free, but it may not be easy to find what you’re looking for

• iStockphoto: Inexpensive photos (under $10) with a decent selection

• Getty Images: Images cost more (usually under $100 if you stick with royalty free), but for no charge, they’ll help you find the right photo

Services like these make it easy for you to add that human element to your site: an open face, a warm smile, engaging eyes. Now you’re connecting.

But even the nicest, most professional photo of a pleasant-looking model wearing a headset won’t show the uniqueness of your business. It won’t connect with your visitors as effectively as snapshots of real people at your company.

We encourage you to consider:

Pictures of You

It’s easier to trust something if you can see it. Seeing is believing.

Your site needs to convey that your business is credible, and authentic photos of your people will help establish that trust.

Ideally, you should have your pictures professionally shot. A pro will have the lighting, camera, and eye to make your photos shine.

The shoot will cost something, but the photos can be used in many materials, such as printed brochures, presentations, media placements (PR), business cards, and even on social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.

Use your photos as a chance to show style and creativity.

Video of You

Give the face of your company a video lift. Online video of your people and your business can have a dramatic impact on results.

Imagine yourself in action on your own website, discussing your professional passion and telling your story. What could be more compelling?

A half-day camera shoot of you in front of a green screen might not cost as much as you think. But even so, many business owners are uncomfortable with the idea of appearing as a talking head on their own website. That kind of hesitation can cost you money.

From a marketing perspective, a business owner is an invaluable spokesperson. Your body language, gestures, and tone of voice bring your business to life. The value of that impression far outweighs the cost or discomfort of creating your video clip.

Pictures of Your Business

To make your connection with visitors as impactful as it can be, think about focusing on places as well as people.

If you have a store, show a picture of it. Or post images of your offices. Even a tightly cropped photo of your sign will make your business seem more real, more tangible.

This is where a company with a physical location can have an advantage over a web-based business.

Orbit’s site is a good example of this. To differentiate ourselves from the thousands of virtual businesses in our industry, we added an interactive feature to our site that shows off our space.

Bottom Line

Humanize your site. Use people pictures—stock photos if you have to, but whenever possible, opt for professional pictures of your actual team.

Add style with professional photography or illustration. Then, if your budget allows it, consider video and invite your visitors to look you straight in the eyes.

What Matters With Meta Tags Optimization?

There is a hidden element in your webpage that can help your marketing efforts considerably. Although many webmasters tend to ignore these little gems, the fact of the matter is that they can help you to outdo your competition in many cases. I’m talking about meta tags and the proper use of them. Of course, along with the proper use of these tags comes a cautionary statements as well. Meta tags optimization needs to be approached properly or else you run the risk of being dropped from the search engines or being buried so deep that nobody is ever going to find you at all.

The most important element as far as meta tags optimization is concerned is the title of the webpage itself. This is something that you should take a considerable amount of time optimizing and writing. First of all, you should always be including your target keyword or keyword phrase within the title tag itself. After all, this is what people are going to see whenever they are searching on Google and other search engines. If you use the target keyword phrase and people search for that phrase, it will become bold whenever they are viewing it in the search engines. This can increase your click through rate considerably.

Another important part of meta tags optimization is making sure that you put a compelling line in the title tag as well. Although it may be enough for you to simply to include the keyword phrase that you are targeting, adding a few additional words which will entice the people to click on the link to your website can be quite beneficial. For example, if your keyword phrase was “dog training” you would want to use something enticing in the title tag that included the keyword phrase, such as “Dog Training Tips and Tricks”.

Another important part of meta tags optimization is the description tag. Although many people consider this to be a dead tag, the search engines still use it, at the very least for text in the search engine results. Even Google from time to time will still use the description tag although for some reason or another they will, at times, simply pull random text off of the webpage. Make sure that you include your target keyword phrase in the description tag as well as a call to action. It may give you a little boost in the search engines but if you use the tag correctly, you will see a jump in your visitors from the search engines.

The only other meta tag that really should be looked at is the keyword tag. This is not as important of an element in meta tags optimization as it used to be but it is still worth including. Use your target keywords as well as a view related keyword phrases that are included on the webpage. Be careful not to overdo it or it may be considered spamming by the search engines and you could receive a penalty.

Another great way to drive traffic to your website is to take advantage of manual traffic exchanges
