If you’re serious about bowhunting, it is important to invest in some basic bowhunting equipment. You only need two equipments to actually start bowhunting: a bow and an arrow.

Bow

The bow is the curved piece of wood or metal, whose ends are joined together by a string. It is used to project the arrow towards the target. There are different kinds of bows available in the market for various forms of archery. These include the self bow, the composite bow, and the flatbow to name a few. For bowhunting, the most commonly used are compound bows, which are bows that have been designed to minimize the force necessary to keep the bowstring taut. When a compound bow is drawn at its maximum capacity, it can help hold up to two times its draw weight. This kind of bow uses elliptical wheels or cams in order to accomplish this. Aside from compound bows, there are other bows that can be used in bowhunting. These include recurve bows, which are bows whose tips bend away from the user when unstrung, and longbows, which are classic bows that have narrow D-shaped limbs.

In certain locations, crossbows, which are mechanically drawn bows, may be used. A crossbow is a very powerful piece of equipment. The main advantage of the crossbow is that it is not limited by the strength of the user; however, it is also a heavier piece of equipment and cannot be fired as fast as other kinds of bows. This kind of bow is best used by more advanced bowhunters.

Arrow

The arrow is the pointed tool that is shot using the bow. It is composed of the arrowhead in front, the shaft, and fletchings and nock at the end. Different materials, such as aluminum, carbon and even fiberglass, are used to make the arrow shafts. These materials can help determine the weight of the arrow, which is important when deciding what kind of arrow to use. If you need arrows that are fast, then you should get a lightweight arrow, such as one made of carbon. If you need arrows that can penetrate deep, then you should get heavier arrows, such as one made of aluminum.

Arrows also have different arrowheads, depending on the arrow’s use. Broadhead arrows are the most commonly used for hunting. These arrows contain sharp edges that are able to cause a great amount of bleeding. Blunt arrows may also be used in bowhunting, but only to stun small game. Meanwhile, field tip arrows are best used when practicing, as these arrows tend to not get stuck in the targets.

There are also different kinds of fletchings used in arrows. You can use feather fletchings or the newer plastic vanes. You can also use straight or helical fletchings, with the helical type being the more recommended variety.

Before buying, do your research. Ask an expert to help you decide on the equipment that will fit you, and try shooting with these equipments. Once you’ve found the right equipment for you, you can build your own bowhunting set in no time!

The beginner houseplant lover who visits her garden supply store is certainly going to be overwhelmed at the huge number and variety of indoor garden equipment she is going to find on sale for takin care of her houseplants. There are literally hundreds of different kinds of tools, like rakes and sprayers, on the market. If almost all of them can be useful, only a small number of them are essential for houseplant care.

If you are not scared off by the huge number of different tools available, you will often tend to buy more tools than you really need, or at the very least more than you are convinced you need. It’s very common for a beginner who has let herself get carried away, to realize after a couple of months that the only uses she can find for the expensive decorative pots she bought was as the base of a home-made lamp. We certainly don’t want this to happen to you.

In fact, other than the pots you need, you can cultivate an indoor garden with no particular equipment. However, if you start off with the basic tools described below, you can be confident that you will be equipped for every houseplant care eventuality. All the equipment mentioned here are easily available in any garden supply store. The beginner houseplant lover can get everything she needs for less than a total of twenty dollars.

Basic Houseplant Care Tools

There is no reason that you can’t start home gardening and do a good job at it without buying some of the expensive tools you can found in the market. For example, did you know that a simple kitchen fork can be used instead of a cultivator, and that you can use an old teapot to water your houseplants?

It is true that the professional tools designed to fulfill the specific functions for which they were made are a great deal more efficient than their homemade substitutes. In addition, we firmly believe that in the long run you will be happier with professionally-made tools because they last longer, make your work easier, and wear better.

The most convenient trowel you can get is one that is less than 3″ at the top of the blade since most common houseplants grow in relatively small pots. Furthermore, they are inexpensive and easily available.

The next piece of equipment you will need are bulb sprayers. They are are used to wet the foliage of most houseplants and come in different sizes. For taking care of houseplant, you should buy the smallest kind available. You can replace a bulb sprayer with an atomizer such as the ones sold to spray medicine or perfume although it won’t be as efficient as a bulb sprayer.

Another home gardening tool you will need are watering cans. Again, these come in every size and shape you can image. Howeverr, we can say without doubt the best kind available on the market today is the type with the long thin spout. Why? Because it is especially useful in watering around the base of plants whose foliage should not be wetted, such as in the case of the Saintpaulia or African Violet.

Finally, either you are a beginner or seasoned home gardener, you should have at hand a ball of light twine to use for example in tying up climbing houseplants and in tying back the unruly plant.

Nathalie Lafleur (which means flower in French) has written hundreds of articles on houseplant care. Taking care of houseplants has been a hobby that quickly turned into a passion for her. You can read more of her articles at: http://www.flowerandflorist.com

Growing Garlic

Author: admin

While we all know that garlic has many health benefits such as being a natural antibiotic, you may not know that they can also be healthy for your garden as well. As a companion plant, when they are planted near roses and raspberries, garlic will improve the growth and health of your plants. It has the added benefit of deterring Japanese beetles and aphids. Garlic is easy to grow and each planted clove will produce a full head of Garlic with between 8 to 20 cloves per head. To get started in with planting your garlic, first purchase your garlic of choice. Since the garlic from grocery stores has antisprouting chemicals added to it, be sure and buy your garlic from a reputable source rather than a grocery store. One variety that you may enjoy that is popular here in the Mid-South is the mild flavored ‘Elephant’ garlic which has large clusters.

Planting Garlic

One half pound of garlic seed is a good start and will produce about 15 plants. Garlic is divided into hardnecks (Allium sativum var. ohioscorodon) and softnecks (Allium sativum var. sativum). First, check online catalogs or your local co-op for the variety that will suit your needs best.

Next, decide where you will plant your garlic. A raised bed is suggested if you do not have good soil or if you live in a wet climate. Good soil means loamy soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. Composted manure for essential nutrients incorporated into soil a few weeks before planting is helpful. If you are planting your garlic directly into your soil, plant in wide-rows 10 to 12 inches wide. Timing is important when planting garlic. Bigger bulbs will be produced if you plant in the fall and let it grow and mature until the following summer. If you find that it’s springtime already and you haven’t planted yours yet, go ahead and plant if you like, just realize you will get smaller bulbs. Since garlic bulbs like cool weather, the earlier you can plant it the better it will grow and the bigger the bulbs will be.

Garlic is not susceptible to disease, but as with any plant, having good air circulation is the key to a healthy plant. If your garlic develops thrips, apply insecticidal soap. In cold climates, add more mulch a month after planting to prevent extreme temperature fluctuations. When growth appears in late winter, pull back the mulch and begin monthly applications of an organic fertilizer such as blood meal or fish emulsion. Stop fertilizing in mid to late spring (depending on what type of garlic you have). Mulch again as summer approaches.

Harvesting Garlic

It takes about 100 days for bulbs planted in the spring to mature. Harvest between late may in warm climates and mid-August in cooler areas. Stop watering two weeks before harvest. One tip that garlic is ready to harvest is when the leaves on the lower half of the plant turn brown. To harvest, dig the bulbs up rather than pulling them up, Being careful not to damage the outer skins.

Let them cure in a dry, shady, well ventilated location for three days. Don’t wash them yet. If you want to braid your garlic for a decorative touch, now is the time to braid the foliage of softnecks. Cure bulbs for 2 to 3 more weeks until foliage is completely dry. Once foliage is dry, clean the bulbs by wiping or peeling away the outer husk. Trim tops to 1 inch and roots to 1/2 inch.

Storing Garlic Bulbs

To store your garlic bulbs, place them in mesh bags or braided strings in a dark, cool place. Garlic will keep up to three months if stored at between 32 degrees Fahrenheit and room temperature. Humidity level of 65 to 70 percent is best.

Don not refrigerate.

Troubleshooting

Common causes of small or no bulbing include high temperatures, excessive watering, wrong cultivar for your climate, and weed competition. Your local extension service can advise you as to what varieties grow well in your area.

Both you and your garden can benefit from growing garlic. Checking online catalog sources, your local extension service, or with your local garden center will give you many varieties that are fun to try and that will grow well in your area.

The Endless Summer hydrangea, H. macrophlla, has endless possibilities for your garden. That’s why it has become one of the most famous perennial shrubs to come along in a very long time.

This collection, which now includes a white mophead called ‘Blushing Bride’, started with a single plant – Endless Summer The Original. This plant has been proven over the past few years to be an exceptional addition to any garden. They can be used as specimen plants in a perennial bed, or they can be great addition to a shady spot under a tree. They can be pink or blue depending on what type of soil you have them planted in. In order to get them to bloom blue the soil must be aluminum-based with a pH 5.0. For a pink color, the soil must be non-aluminum, neutral, or alkaline.

This plant has been intensely researched at the University of Georgia. Their greenhouse, nursery, and field data all showed that it did indeed flower on new growth, has foliage flat medium green; moderate mildew susceptibility; estimating 3 to 5 feet height and as wide; have suffered cold damage in the trials but the new shoots develop flower buds and fully expressed inflorescences (blooms).

It will bloom May and June with a second full flush in October and November. Studies have shown that when flowers are removed, it takes 10 – 12 weeks before new shoots develop full sized inflorescences. For continuous color, the gardener might remove one half the inflorescences (blooms), allowing the remainder to dry on the plant while the new shoots are producing flower buds for the later in the fall. The reason Endless Summer can bloom for so long is that the colorful heads aren’t really flowers at all. Rather, they are actually sepals that are sterile and grouped in clusters of 3 to 5. The fertile florets are in the center of the cluster and are very small.

If you have these gorgeous plants in your yard, you will probably be tempted to bring some of the blooms inside for you and your family’s enjoyment. Hydrangeas make wonderful bouquets and the Endless Summer hydrangea is no exception. Many people make blue hydrangea wedding bouquets for their special day. The trick is to water the plants thoroughly the day before cutting them and plunge them immediately into a clean bucket of tepid water with a little bleach in it to kill bacteria. Remove lower leaves that will be under water. If wilting occurs, place stems in boiling water for a few seconds. If you prefer, the mopheads can even be dried quite easily if you wait until later in their blooming season, when they are practically drying on the bush.

Endless Summer hydrangeas bloom on both old and new growth. That’s a good thing because so often if we get a late season frost, many varieties of hydrangeas that only grow on new growth, will not bloom that year. That’s why we love the Endless Summer hydrangea so much.

With these beauties, you will get all summer pink or blue flowers depending on the variety you chose. Be sure and check with your local garden center or online catalogs to purchase yours today for a perennial that blooms all summer long.

Need a place to store your gardening tools, lawnmowers, rakes, shovels, etc? Maybe you should consider building your very own gardening storage shed. Building a small garden tool shed is a project many do-it-yourselfers can do themselves with the help of some good plans.

Why build your own? Why not by a kit? In my opinion building your own wooden shed just looks more attractive than a metal or vinyl shed kit. You can add details to your shed to blend in with your house or landscape.

When building your shed, having detailed plans with step by step instructions are a necessity.

Having shed plans or a book with details and illustrations will make building your shed allot easier, and it will turn out better results.

When looking for plans keep in mind how you plan to use this space, this will give you an idea how big you will want to build.

So where do you get these plans? When I need to build something I usually hit the bookstore for ideas. There are some great books with nice illustrations and instructions that will come in handy when building a shed. There are also many sites online with free storage shed plans.

Once you have the design and style you want, take your time to study the plans. Having plans will not only make building easier, it will also give you a good idea of the amount of money you will need. The plans you use should have a material list, with the material list you can get a good idea of the cost of this project.

Sheds are pretty basic structures that many homeowners can build themselves. You will start with the foundation. If you are building a small garden shed, the most common foundation type will be a skid foundation. Building on a skid foundation will make your shed portable, in case you ever need to move it.

Prepare the area by leveling and adding about four inches of gravel. Setting your shed on gravel will protect the foundation from moister and wood decay.

Once you have your foundation finished, you will frame the walls and install your roof rafters. Next you will install the siding, roof decking shingles, doors, and trim.

Take your time to familiarize yourself with the plans you have chosen. Study the material list, once you are ready you can pre cut all the material and assemble the shed.

Some things you will want to consider before building are your local zoning regulations. Make sure you are aware of any regulations or permits that might be required.

If you have never built anything before, this is a great project that can be accomplished even for a beginner. By having patience and preparing yourself from the start, you will achieve great results. By having plans that are simple to understand, and following the instructions you are sure to build a great looking storage shed.

If you feel you don’t have the carpentry skills required, there are other alternatives. Find the plans you want and have a local handyman build it. Another option is buying a shed kit. Building with a shed kit will be more expensive, but it will make building easier. You will still need to prepare an area for building, and follow the instructions. Some of the materials used for these kits consist of wood, vinyl or metal. All parts will be pre cut and ready for assembly. Most of these kits will also include doors and windows.

Personally I would not buy a shed kit, I prefer building from scratch. Like I mentioned earlier, a shed is a simple structure, with some good storage shed plans, this project can be built even if you are a beginner builder.

If you have decided to build a storage shed from scratch, take a look at my site for free shed plans. You can see my – how to build a shed – project, with pictures and instructions www.MyBackyardPlans.com/storagesheds.php

Trees of Life

Author: PatrickDesnoyers

Trees can give life. It can produce the air that people need in order to breath and reduces the carbon dioxide which can pollute and bring harm to one’s respiratory system. But aside from playing this role in our environment, trees can also offer more. It can give food, it can provide shelter, it can be created into medicine, and so much more. Every country or region has their so-called “tree of life”. Find out what these plants are and why are they considered as one of the most important trees that exists today.

In Asia, particularly in the country called Philippines, there is a certain tropical tree called the Coconut. The coconut tree was considered as the country’s Tree of Life because of the unlimited benefits that you can get from the tree starting from its leaves up to its roots. The roots and the trunk of the coconut tree can be used in creating durable materials from wood. More often than not, the trunk of this tree is turned into furniture and materials needed for constructing a home. On the other hand, the roots of the coconut tree can provide extracts that can be used in creating beverages and medicines at the same time. Meanwhile, the leaves of the coconut tree can be turned into baskets, hats, trays, and other novelty items. But it is widely used in the country as brooms since vacuums are not really popular in Philippines. Of course, who could forget about the fruit about this tree of life? There is a wide array of products that you can get in this one fruit alone. The coconut meat can be made as chips, flour, milk, and even candy. From the same fruit, you can also create coconut oil that can be used for cooking and even for automobiles as well.

India also has its own plant that they consider as the Tree of Life such as the peepal and the banyan tree. Also known as the Bo-Tree or the Sacred Fig, the peepal is famous among the Hindus as well as Buddhist. But unlike the coconut tree, the peepal does not give as much products compared to the other tree. In this case, the Sacred Fig is just symbolically called as the tree of life. This is where many Buddhists and Hindus do their meditation. Many believe that this must be called as the tree of spirituality rather than the tree of life.

From the same country, there is another plant that they call as their tree of life called the banyan tree. Unlike the peepal tree, the banyan tree is widely used in the country for making herbal medicines. Aside from that, it is also considered by the locals of India as a sacred tree and most of them call the banyan tree as the Ashwath Vriksha which means The Light Within. Most of the trees of life here in India are their sacred trees where they get faith instead of usable items. It might not nourish their bodies or give them a source of income but it does feed their souls with faith, which is essential part of their religion.

Here’s an interesting story about my latest miracle, my new Muck Boots Hoser Classic Boots. Turns out my wife is always right, after all…I work as a general contractor in the Northeast part of the country. Have you ever been there? Winters are very cold and very blustery. This week, I had a job fixing a leaky second-story window for some lady who has been bugging me for a while, claiming it was raining inside her house in the front foyer. Time to get this job done and over with. Being just a week or so after Christmas, I happened to be wearing the new Muck Boots Hoser Classics that my wife just bought me for a gift. Now, I had thought my old boots were good enough, but she insisted that she had heard about these great boots and that I should really get a pair. So, mostly I wore them just to humor her. That’s me, trying to please all the ladies.

On the day I was doing this particular job, it was well below freezing. In fact, the temperatures weren’t much above zero degrees Fahrenheit. People in the southern states may not comprehend this, but it means it was very cold outside. The kind of day that you typically don’t want to be outside, but, a job’s a job.

Let’s just say that usually I have to take frequent breaks to thaw my hands and feet during these outside winter jobs. But, I found something quite interesting during this latest outdoor assignment—my feet were warm all day long. I worked longer than ever, and got more work accomplished than usual without needing to take time to defrost. At first I thought it was a fluke, then, after it happened again, I realized that these Muck Boots Hoser Classic Boots were really rather remarkable.

The Muck Boots Hoser Classic Boots are 100% waterproof, and definitely the warmest boots I’ve ever come across. Believe me, I’ve tried quite a few. I have the Mid version, which comes up to my mid-calf. There is also a Hoser Classic Hi for those folks who would like the boots to come up even higher. The upper is snug around my calf, and keeps any snow or rain out.

Walking around in these Muck Boots Hoser Classic Boots, climbing ladders to fix those high windows, and carrying heavy boxes through snowbanks is no problem with these boots. Not only are they incredibly comfortable to wear all day, they have great traction, and plenty of flexibility so that I don’t feel clumsy at all.

So, I guess I would like to take this opportunity to offer my very public thanks to my wonderful wife, who has made me forget about those old boots by giving me a great gift of Muck Boots Hoser Classic Boots to keep me warm, dry, and comfortable all day long while I work. She might be hoping I’ll take up an outdoor winter hobby that might keep me out of the house even longer. Thanks, Honey!

Flower garden plants can be used effectively to produce a stunning garden that has blooms the entire season long. The type of garden plants used should figure prominently in your garden design. Annuals, flower bulbs, ornamental grasses, perennials, biennials and climbing vines are all excellent flower garden plants. These plants will have their own growth requirements and will only grow in specific conditions. Additionally some plants may require special treatment to grow properly.

Flowering plants that last year after year are called perennials. These plants will return every year but they only produce flowers for about two to four weeks a year. You can chose perennials that bloom at different times of the year so your garden should have a mix of early, mid and late blooming perennials in order to have blooms all season. Perennials will multiply on their own, so you can plan on dividing yours and having new plants for another part of your garden every 3 years or so.

Annuals are flower garden plants that only last for one season as their whole life is contained within one season. These plants produce colorful flowers that will last the entire season. Some popular perennials are nigella, sweet alyssum, blue salvia, spider flowers, marguerite daisies, Brazilian verbena and cosmos. These flowers do produce seeds each year so they can grow again.

Biennials are similar to annuals but their life span lasts for two years. The first year they grow leaves and then it is during the second year that they produce flowers. Despite the fact that they die after two years many gardeners love biennials, as their flowers are exquisite. Verbascums, foxgloves and hollyhocks are all very popular biennials. Many times you will find biennials next to the annuals in your garden store.

Tuber and corms are also called flower bulbs and these plants hibernate underground. Each year they store energy for the following year in their bulb that is stored underground. In order to grow the next year they need to go through a cold season though some bulbs, mainly summer bulbs cannot tolerate temperatures under freezing. Tulips, crocuses, daffodils and snowdrops are all early blooming bulbs and gladioli, dahlias, begonia, calla lilies and canna lilies are summer flowering bulbs. If you live in a very cold climate and want to plant bulbs that can’t tolerate the freezing temperatures, you can dig them up in the fall and overwinter them in your cellar or a cold area, then plant them again in spring.

If you have a small yard and need to focus on vertical space then climbing vines are the flower garden plants for you. These plants are great on a trellis. Some easy growing vines that have lovely flowers are the hyacinth, sweet peas, morning glories and clematis. Ornamental grass is also a different type of flower garden plant as it is mainly used to add texture to a garden. The grass will change color throughout the year while flowering in the fall and it moves when touched by the smallest breeze.
