Landscape architects are often under appreciated. The reason is that most people don’t even know there is such a thing as landscape architect. Landscape architects are responsible for making many places not only green and comfortable with natural vegetation but also aesthetically pleasing. Landscape architects design landscapes, but it is not just about trees, bushes, and flowers. Landscape architects also implement a variety of hardscape items such as fountains, tree grates, tree guards, trash receptacles, trash receptacles, trench grates, bollards, planters and other items commonly found in landscape projects. The synergy of all these things specified by landscape architects is what makes a landscape beautiful.

Often the landscape architect specifies tree grates, benches, bollards and other products for streetscapes as well. They are not limited to residential projects. In fact the bigger projects are commercial projects. These are places with a lot of open space where you often find tree grates, benches, trash receptacles and other items that makes everything convenient and enjoyable.

Landscape architects are really responsible for creating those beautiful places we all like to visit in the summer. When it comes to outdoor activities, if you like the place because of the various amenities such as the tree grates, the benches, and the trash receptacles, it is because of a landscape architect. They create these wonderful outdoor places where we all go enjoy outdoor life. Even if you prefer more of an indoor activity, if there is open space such as a mall. You will often see the tree grates around the indoor trees, the water fountains, the benches and the trash receptacles which are likewise designs which were created for your enjoyment after much time and hard work was invested by landscape architects.

When it comes to cleaning up the environment, especially our air, we often think of trees, so guess which profession is most important ? The landscape architect is very important. Landscape architects determine what if any trees to specify and what tree grates to place at the base to cover the tree well. The landscape architect has to look at the enormous selection of trees to determine which tree is best suited for that particular environment. Often the architect sets the standards for a particular city and if you drive by a street and look at the trees and think how wonderful it is that you have those trees, then chances are you should be thankful to the hard work that was put in by a landscape architect.

If you have ever consider being an architect, you have to consider that there are many types of architects and one particular area of expertise is landscape architecture. For individuals that love the outdoors and outdoor living, landscape architecture is a career to consider. Architecture in general is a cyclical industry with ups and downs. Sometimes you have so much work you can’t charge outrageous fees and sometimes business is so bad that you don’t know what to do with your time or have not job at all, but it is not much different from many other jobs. There are cyclical and there are staple industries, but what is certain is that landscape architects specify fountains, tree grates, benches and other site amenities that make the environment so much more enjoyable for the public.

Have you ever walked past a home with a solarium? If you have, you undoubtedly were amazed by the beauty and splendor created year round by a beautiful room dedicated to a tropical setting. A solarium is a great addition to any landscape, adding beautiful curb appeal to any home. Regardles of your climate, a solarium can be your solace throughout the dark days of winter, adding a room solely dedicated to getting the ultimate amount of sunlight from everyday. A solarium is not just a sunroom, surrounded by glass from top to bottom, east to west, it is the window to the world in a perfect 360 degree perspective. A solarium can create the perfect atmosphere and environment to fully appreciate mother nature all year round.

What is a solarium?

A solarium is an atrium style sunroom which is surrounded by panels of glass or clear plexi glass, extending onto the roof to create an environment accessible by every bit of sunlight. The solarium can be framed in wood, metal or aluminum depending on your climate. It can be a small addition to a porch or a complete front or side of the structure addition. It can also be a separate standing structure on your property, such as in your garden or next to a pool. To ensure you will be able to enjoy your solarium year round, the roof cover must be designed for local climates. In colder winter weather climates it is imperative to install the roof glass sloped so snow can easily slide off and not accumulate and add heavy weight. Sealing the joints in a solarium is also very important in order to ensure the heat inside stays and the cold outside stays out. Cold climates will likely require thermo pane glass for winter use. Insulating all exterior walls is imperative to keeping both cold and hot weather out and the perfect temperature climate within.

Can I install a solarium myself?

A solarium is a very large undertaking which will require a professional to install. Solariums require major construction, and as such must be approved by city ordinances. There are many variables involved in the overall construction as well as the design. Examples of construction variables are the use of straight or curved glass styles, and creating several different types of roofs such as a cathedral roof which is pointed, or a conservatory structure which is octangonal in shape. The options are limitless when it comes to design. Solariums can be all white in order to create the most amount of light within, or sandstone to achieve a ‘earthy’ atmosphere. You can have the exterior in any color aluminum and add a wooden structure frame interior or even be framed with bronzes for the added elegant fell. Getting a personalized quote for your specific needs and designs from a solarium expert in your area is your best bet for getting a idea of the price and time of your solarium project.

What can I expect to be able to grow year round in my solarium?

A well designed solarium will accommodate a wide range of plants and vegetation but will depend on your winter climate and sun exposure. Solariums or sunrooms are a great bridge between indoor and outdoor living. As such you’re best to consult an expert landscape designer and landscape construction company, so you can be assured your new sunroom lives up to your vision.

Adding a solarium to a already existing structure or building a freestanding solarium is a great way to enjoy your garden year round. Getting started with a professional to decide on the right location and construction will not only save you money, it will expand your options with a more creative input and design technics. The possibilities are endless when it comes to the look and atmosphere you are trying to create. All that will be left after you build it, will be the years of enjoyment from the beautiful indoor / outdoor living environment you have created.

Most avid gardeners and landscapers look forward to the fall and winter seasons as much as they do the vibrancy of spring and summer. Fall means preparing for spring and there are a lot of things to do to help minimize the damaging effects of a hard winter. Caring properly in the fall will minimize the work needed come spring. New gardeners and landscapers are overwhelmed by the sheer size of the list of things to do. Don’t be, follow these easy instructions and you can be prepared for anything your garden grows come spring time.

Know your terrain – What type of soil do you have in your area? Once you know that you can find the proper soil additives and fertilizers to ensure the ground itself is ready to be planted after the last frost.

Know your types of plants – Each plant has different needs, so it is very important to carefully look at the various trees, shrubs and plants in your landscape. Feeding and fertilization of each plant varies, some will have to be pruned others will need to be fertilized.

Once you know what’s in your garden, follows these easy instructions:

Seed Stalk Plants – Should always be removed in the fall to avoid the need to weed in the spring. Removing seed stalk plants from your garden in the fall will also provide room for new different plants in the next season.

Shasta daisies and Goldenrod plants- Remove any spent flower stocks before winter and cut back extra growth. Cutting back will help them grow bigger and healthier in the spring.

Shrubs – Don’t need a lot of preparation. Some like to cover shrubs with burlap to help avoid frost, but it is not necessary. Shrubs are hearty and resilient, but if you have a dying shrub, remove it to make room for another healthy one to be planted in the spring.

Roses – Are very vulnerable to the effects of fall and winter. If the roses are incorporated into the landscape, take extra care to help them survive in order to keep the overall landscape beautiful. Extreme weather changes kill roses, so take care in either bringing them in over the fall winter season if you can, or covering them outside. Keep in mind roses hate humidity as much as frost, so watch the indoor temperature as well.

Perennials – Should be treated like shrubs. They are hearty and resilient much like the shrubs, and aside from some minimal pruning they won’t need extra care.

It’s always a good idea to use this fall and winter season as an opportunity to make changes and improve your landscape and garden. Take a good hard look at your landscape, how can it be improved? Maybe there are new flowers you would like to plant or a new line of shrubs to create a room-like space outside. Whatever your creative mind comes up with, do your homework, know your terrain and have fun. That’s what it’s all about anyway, isn’t it?

Back in the days when I used to go to my grandparents, I always remember them having a wooden shed. I used to love that shed, I spent many a happy summer afternoon playing near that shed with my granddad close by. The shed was quite old and falling apart and as each year went by, it got worse and worse and now it has been taken away as it had just about had it!

In more modern times, people are thinking about a metal shed as a real alternative to a wooden one. My parents now have a metal shed for their wood that they store for the fire in winter. I remember they used to have a wooden shed a well, but that got sold with the old house and now its no more.

So what are sheds used for? Well back in the day when I used to go to my grandparents, their shed used to be full of gardening equipment and a lot of the tools were pretty old and basic. I remember they even had a lawnmower with no motor! That’s right, this contraption they had had blades like a normal mower, but you really had to use some brute force to get that think to cut grass as the blades only turned when you pushed it! Well that’s what there shed was used for, old gardening tools, and that can be said of a lot of sheds these days as well.

You can say that a wooden shed does look a lot prettier than a metal shed, that can be true. The wooden shed just looks a lot nicer in an old fashioned way compared to a metal one. If you have an older style house then a wooden shed is probably going to look much better in your back yard than a big grey metal one as well.

Metal sheds however do have a number of advantages when compared to a wooden one. The main advantage I can think of is the security aspect of a shed. As the recession hits or cities and towns, people are becoming less and less affluent and some people who are especially less affluent may decide to turn to crime. It is a sad fact, but crime does increase in times of financial hardship. One of the easiest places that can be burgled it the wooden shed. Back in my grandparents’ time, it was not necessary to have a completely secure shed as most of the items they had were not very valuable. Now however, the value of the products in a shed is worth a lot more. I know that my father actually has a ride on lawnmower which is worth a few thousand pounds and can also be driven away! So their need for a very secure shed is important and that’s why they have gone for a metal one.

Another advantage of metal over wood is the fact that metal will never be eaten away by termites! I remember my grandfathers shed was quite badly eaten away and this is what was making it worse and worse each year. This is an especially important factor if you are going to be keeping any kind of food stuff in your shed such as fertilizer or plant food – these are just the type of thing that insects love to get their hands on (or mouths on in any case). A metal shed would be more secure to unwelcome visitors.

In terms of ascetics, the wooden shed will always look better, but then again when you look at the benefits of a metal shed, you may wonder if looks are enough!

For those who love flowers and love having outdoor and indoor flowers around their home, they know that winter can be a tough season on their plants. Cut flowers and potted flowering plants such as poinsettias and flowering bulbs can last longer when one adopts a few flower care techniques.

The following is a list of tips on how to make your flowers last through the winter:

Potted Flowers

1.When selecting a potted plant, the best choice would be a plant where there is just the bud that is showing. If there is no plant with just a bud, then pick a plant with bright green leaves. The plant you choose should not have roots protruding from the drainage holes. If there are roots this means the plant is root bound and should not be chosen

2.Fill a water catcher with small stones. Fill the water catcher with enough water to barely cover the top of the stones.

3.Water the plant. Pour the water until it coming out of the drainage holes. Place your potted plant on top of the stones in the water catcher.

3.Place your potted plant in an area where it will be exposed to about 6 hours of sun each day. Temperatures of the room that the plant is in should be about 60 degrees F., even at night.

4.Whenever there are dead leaves and faded flowers, remove them.

5.Keep the water fresh and clean.

Cut Flowers

1.Prepare a vase for the flowers. Get your favorite vase and thoroughly wash it with dish detergent. Rinse the vase thoroughly and dry it.

2.When selecting your flowers, pick flowers that have just begun to open or are still a bud.

3.Place the stems in a container of cold water. While the stems are soaking in the water re-cut the stems by using a pair of scissors. When you cut the stems, make sure you cut it on a slant to allow for better water uptake. Take out any leaves that are in the water.

4.Fill the vase with half water and half with citrus soda such as Sprite. A teaspoon of sugar added to the water is a suitable replacement for citrus soda. You can add a few drops of lemon to the mix if you do not use citrus soda. Add the appropriate amount of flower food. Add a 1 tsp. of bleach. Mix and then add the flowers and arrange them.

5.Place the vase of flowers in a cool area out of the sun for about 2 hours. This will help the flower absorb the water/food mixture thereby increasing the lifespan of the flowers.

6.Put your vase of flowers in a place that is away from direct sunlight, drafts, and excess heat such heating vents. At night, place your arrangement in the refrigerator, but remember to take it out in the morning. Change the water and food every few days.

If properly cared for, you can extend the life of cut flowers and keep potted plants throughout the winter.

Pressed flowers

Pressed flowers are just as lovely as fresh flowers and they last forever. Pressing your own flowers can be a very fun project. There’s not much to it. Just follow my easy instructions.

First you need the following materials: your favorite flowers or foliage picked and ready to press. A large phone book or dictionary, a sheet of newspaper and more heavy objects enough to equal about 20 lbs. worth. If you have kids, you can always find some kids books or toys so you can stack it on top as weight.

Then you need to take your fresh flowers and place them in the refrigerator or in an ice chest to keep them from wilting. If you let your flowers or foliage wilt then it will give you a discolored flower. You can do this while preparing the rest of your pressing materials.

Next, you need to place the flowers or foliage on the inside fold of the sheet of newspaper, do not overlap the leaves, stems or petals and then fold the top half of the newspaper sheet down onto the flowers. If you do not have access to a newspaper, you also can use sales advertisements or thrifty nickel pages. Anything with a fold with generally does.

The next step is to open the dictionary or large book and place the newspaper in the middle of the book, close the book and place your heavy objects on top. The drying process will take about three days. Three days is generally a rule of thumb, this is a good amount of time so that all of the moisture is absorbed out of them and this makes for a pretty dried flower.

Once the flowers are dry and pressed you can use them however you like. Some people like them in arrangements, gifts, artwork, etc. You can even use pressed flowers to make drink coasters. The ideas for using pressed flowers are endless. It is all up to how creative you are and how what kind of ideas you have in mind. I know many people who press holly and use it in floral arrangements. It is gorgeous. The sky is the limit.

If you are wanting a great variety of flowers, trees and shrubs to press then you can check out quick growing trees here they have a large vast variety of items that you can place in your landscape so that once they get into bloom you can have hours of fun pressing flowers, berries, leaves and more to use in a wide variety of objects such as gifts, coasters, artwork and more. Jacob’s Ladder

The name Jacob’s Ladder came from the Greek word – polemos which means war. The Jacob’s Ladder is a gorgeous plant that thrives in part shady area, if you give it too much sun then it looks yellow and dingy losing its flare and appeal. Many homeowner’s use this plant around Koi ponds and backyard ponds because the way it rapidly spreads between 18-36 inches and blooms mainly in shades of blue. The Jacob’s Ladder also can be found in a white variety but the blue is most popular.

The Jacob’s Ladder grows well in zones 3-4 so make sure you check your zone before purchasing. The Jacob’s Ladder is a good plant for the early summer flower garden and when planting should be planted between 12-18 inches apart for a good even coverage.

This type of plant grows best in moderately fertile soil with higher organic matter and the soil needs to be well drained otherwise it will shorten the life span of the plant rapidly and quickly.

There are several different types of Jacob’s Ladder some can grow very rapidly and if left unattended it can make for a very weedy garden. That’s why it looks so great around ponds and in natural areas because it spreads and all you can see is the green and light white striped leaves with blue flowers on it. It works great to fill in spaces. The Blue Pearl is another form that is shorter and lasts longer because it can live in various kinds of soil.

The White Pearl, Pink Beauty, Lambrook Mauve and the Stairway to Heaven is a just a few other varieties but the blue one seems to be the most popular because the color is so rich and deep which really stands out among the green leaves.

Believe it or not, when you invest in this plant if you have a cat and can’t seem to find it, chances are it is in the Jacob’s Ladder because cats seem to love the plants to roll in and frolic in. The cat loves them but can harm or bruise your plants if not careful.

I have had my Jacob’s Ladder for 3 years now and wouldn’t change it for the world it has made a great addition to our landscape. We have a Koi pond in our backyard which is under our deck and we were having trouble getting things to grow there so we purchased a Jacob’s Ladder from our local garden center and have fallen in love with it.

There are many places that you can purchase a Jacob’s Ladder such as online at TN nursery or at their website which is www.tnnursery.net here you can purchase a Jacob’s Ladder and they will make sure that you get a high quality plant delivered straight to your doorstep at an affordable low price that can’t be beat. Leyland Cypress Trees

Do you have noisy neighbors and would love to have a plant that helps block out the noise? Fences don’t work and hedges can get big and bulky so what other choices are there? How about the Leyland Cypress? They have long been known for their fast growing nature at a rate of 3 to 4 feet per year as well as being able to block the wind. Many people use the Leyland Cypress to line a property line and trim them as a hedge of a desired height while some leave them and let them grow to a potential height of 35 to 50 feet. The Leyland Cypress grows well in zones 6-10, making it a great plant in the lower two-thirds of the United States.

The Leyland Cypress can be found at many local garden centers or tree nurseries and even online at www.tnnursery.net which right now has them marked as a special so you can take advantage of a great affordable low price on them and start making your landscape look beautiful. But is there a certain way to plant them and how do you plant them correctly?

By following these few simple planting techniques you can’t go wrong.

First you need to choose a location, make sure that you realize how they grow. The Leyland Cypress grows tall and slim and looks great planted in a straight line such as on a property line. If you are planting on a property line make sure you know where the line is, the last thing you want to do is spend hours planting your trees and it turn out growing over on your neighbors land.

The ideal time to plant your Leyland Cypress is approximately 6 weeks before the first frost of the year, early spring is a viable alternative. The next step is to get all your supplies together such as post hole diggers or a shovel for easy digging. Dig the hole two x the width and depth of your Leyland Cypress root system. This will allow for the cypress to become well established without having to push through the surrounding packed soil.

Once you have the hole dug you can spread the roots gently and place the tree into the hole, which now you can cover with soil and press the soil firmly around the freshly dug area. Now that you have your Leyland Cypress placed into the ground and packed down you can water it and then follow the same pattern or routine for one week intervals during the first growing season. Place a 3-4 inch layer of mulch in a 3 foot circle around the tree and take away any grass or weeds as soon as you see them to prevent from spreading.

Give it time, give them some TLC and in no time you will have a nice uniform row of Leyland Cypress trees growing in your yard or along your property line. Wow! Windbreaker and noise breaker all in one, how can you beat it?
