As fall winds down, with crops ripening and being harvested, perennial flowers and bushes being put to bed beneath a blanket of mulch and the yard cleaned up of debris from the past year, winter is creeping closer. With its arrival, many would think that the year is finished, as far as plantings and so forth. However, a gardening idea for spring time is born as you sit next to the cozy fire, thumbing through seed and garden catalogs.
Looking at last years accounting of gardening activities, successes and failures, you make a new plan for a new year. It can’t be started too soon, some gardeners say. If you had access to a digital camera, you may have snapped pictures of the beauty surrounding you outside, to be poured over and enjoyed throughout the long winter months.
It is also a great time, tucked away in your garden shop or garage from the cold, howling winds, to sharpen all of your tools, cleaning them up and preparing them for their next years’ duties. Oil the moving parts of tools, sharpen the cutting ones and repair any damaged handles of others. Run the gas out of the lawnmower before storing it, as well as the rotor tiller and other engines.
When the seed catalogs are spread around you and your pencil is sharpened sufficiently, make your order for the next year. Consulting your last years garden activities, make your choices based on the success and not so successful results. If a new fruit or vegetable catches your attention, make a decision to try it or not. Progress is great but sticking with the tried and true is also a good choice. Perhaps a little of each is in order.
Another good idea is to use the winter months for preparing your fruit trees for another round of fruit-bearing by trimming and pruning them to make them stronger. This is also the best timing for dormant oil spray to catch the little critters ‘bugging’ your fruit and making it impossible for them to come out and snack on your favorite apple or pear this next growing season.
If you have hedges that have outgrown their boundaries, just before the growing season begins, take your handy-dandy little lopping shears out and attack it. If the branches are sufficiently small, your hedge trimmer will work as well. If the branches and limbs are very big, chain saws eat them up easily.
If a new flower or veggie bed is in your plan for the following year, get ahead of it by marking it out and covering it with a thick bed of mulch. Grass clippings, leaves, even newspaper held down by these other things, will make it a snap to till up later. This is especially true if it is grass you will be tilling up. By spring, the grass will be dead.
So you see, the months before spring are not wasted. The successful garden starts in the cold, harsh winter time. Even if you garden in a moderate climate, the garden will benefit by taking a little rest in the winter. It will gather its strength, with help from you, and burst forth in abundance with a gardening idea for spring time.
Gardening has plenty of benefits especially when done just at your own backyard. It can provide you with free and fresh fruits and vegetables if in your garden you grow these types of plants. You can also enjoy the smell of scented flowers and be amazed with the splendor of blooming ornamental plants that gives your backyard a daily refreshing look.
Every type of plants that you grow in your garden has its own benefits. These benefits are certainly useful to your house and life in general. But each plant has its own individual requirements for it to grow, bear fruits, and produce flowers. These requirements should not be taken for granted. Most importantly, even when all of these necessary requisites in growing a plant are already complied with, it is still essential that the person regularly performs the tasks of a gardener such as flowering the plants, trimming them, removing the weeds, and many more.
In deciding the type of plants to grow in your garden, there are certain things you should consider first. The kind of soil that you have in your garden is among the primary considerations before planting anything in it. Make sure that the plant your garden can grow and get vital nourishment from the type of soil it is planted. After this, the owner should then decide the purpose of the garden, whether it is for production of home grown vegetables and fruits to make it a point that a food is always available at home or to have a garden to improve the aesthetics of the backyard by planting various ornamental plants.
Then, the size of the garden should also be determined to know what type of plants to grow since there are those that grow over an inch wide and tall while others have humble sizes that fit in the jars. With all of these basic considerations at hand, the gardener may choose to install modern equipments that aid him in doing his tasks for the beloved plants such as sprinklers, lawnmowers, garden tractors, and leaf or wood chippers and sweepers. These new technology makes gardening a lot easier and more fun to do.
Finally, whether your garden is for beautification or for production, it is but worthy to provide some viewing spot to see the wonderful garden that you have. This viewing place can be a patio or simply an improvised shanty with some strong tarp as the roofing. To add more comfort while at the viewing spot, it is better if the place is warm even during winter season. Thus, installing some fire pit in the place will certainly improve not only the warmth and lighting of the space but it also adds to its embellishments especially that the said fire pit has a wonderfully designed receptacle that suits the outdoor garden design.
Verily, having a garden at the backyard gives the owner a plethora of worthy and fun activities to do with wonderful products to reap after. A garden is not a dormant decoration that offers only one kind of entertainment. Gardening itself is already a form of entertainment notwithstanding the great benefits that it offers for the health and nourishment of the persons and the beauty of the house.
Lauren B. Laughlin enjoys writing for Myfirepits.com which sells fire pit and outdoor fire pit as well as a host of additional products.
Everyone these days hanker after a lovely garden or open space to allow them to relax in after work. Indeed, this feature often dictates whether someone will buy a house or not and whether they can improve on it to their own standards. Bird houses and water fountains are used to brighten not only the indoor areas but deck areas too and look lovely at the same time.
These days, people love to see what is available in garden centers and the like and usually aspire to getting something that makes their garden look wonderful. Rustic style benches and nooks are popular always and fit right into any style of planting. But the more sophisticated and stylish styles are also becoming popular. Indeed, some people have started having full outdoor fire places fitted in so that the family can gather round the hearth on warm evenings. Although many people would not really go to this extent, it does show how the fashion trends are changing from the past.
Online websites carry a whole host of wonderful items that can be utilized in the home and outside area. For dining tables or coffee tables, miniature water fountains bring a lovely look and sound to the room and will often intrigue people with their Zen like appearance. But for the ultimate in home decoration, fake exotic flowers, like orchids, which have been attached to wood and other kinds of materials, are a great way to add color without the fuss of looking after them.
Even real life Bonsai trees have now come into the domain of most people and they are far easier to look after with all the full instructions coming with them. Although these used to be prohibitively expensive, nowadays they are well within the reach of the working man. They look extremely oriental if placed in lovely china or wooden pots and many people use them as center pieces for the dining room table. Perfectly miniature, these exotic looking trees certainly bring a touch of style to any setting and will look great with both the more traditional furniture as well as ultra modern.
But the best thing to do, when designing a garden or deck layout, is to see what is available first and make some choices from what is on offer. Very often people notice that they lean towards one certain style over another and if this is the case then just decorate everything with this theme. Colors of flowers too tend to be favored and by just having up to three colors in an area, the place will look remarkably stylish. Of course, having a riot of color in all the seasons is favored by some, but those who veer towards restraint would find this clashing a little bit too much.
Finally, if a garden is being redesigned or started from scratch, then it may be a good idea to work with a specialist so that they can advise on how it should be planted up. Once the design is worked out, it is now time to choose furniture and other accessories that will set the place off beautifully.
Penny Lane bought several bird houses to put around her backyard. She recently looked online at water fountains in order to purchase one for his parent’s anniversary.
In order for you to understand why growing your own vegetables is a good idea, let me explain how the many changes to the farming methods came about.
It used to be that when growing your own vegetables, you would plant seeds in organically enriched soil, rotate your vegetables so that the soil would not become depleted of specific nutrients, and store some for the winter.
However as farming methods changed so did people’s habits change from growing your own vegetables to buying their vegetables from big stores, fully trusting that these vegetables were like the vegetables they would eat when they were kids. However, this is not the case.
After World War 11, new conventional farming techniques spearheaded by large companies were to drastically change the way farmers grow their crop. As a result, today’s vegetables that we buy off the shelf (unless certified organic) are not as nutrient-filled as they should be and, more than not, are laced with insecticide or pesticides.
Let me explain what happened to farming methods during these last 50+ years, why these new farming method do not provide the same quality of vegetable as we had when we were growing up back before the 60′s.
1: Growing your own vegetables by using the mixed farming/crop rotation method was replaced by growing only one type of vegetable over and over again in the same soil.
Farmers had bought into the idea that instead of following the idea of growing your own vegetables, it would be more profitable to plant huge fields of one crop and use more synthetic fertilizers which companies and government claimed were just as good as compost . . . that in the end the cost of the fertilizer would be offset by selling more produce.
2. Organic Compost was replaced by “special” synthetic chemical-based granular fertilizers.
However, when the farmers began abandoning mixed farming and growing your own vegetables in favor of growing huge crops of only one, maybe two, types of vegetable, the soil was slowly being depleted of much needed nutrients. The soil was not receiving supplemental nutrients since fertilizing with organic compost/good old fashion manure and crop rotation had been eliminated.
To make matters worse, the new synthetic fertilizers did not replenish the soil with all necessary micronutrients and macronutrients neither, so each farmer’s crop became less healthy, had fewer nutrients in them, and certainly doesn’t taste like the ones “Gramma used to grow”.
3: By using the new modern methods of synthetic chemical-based fertilization instead of growing your own vegetables and using organic soil amendments, farmers need to do excessive spraying as crops become less healthy. Why?
It’s a well-known fact that any vegetable which is less than healthy gets attacked more frequently by insects or fungus, so to keep their crops from being destroyed and/or looking good for the consumer, these big farmers have no choice but to spray more often with insecticide and/or pesticides.
People growing your own vegetables used method which kept the vegetables healthier and filled with nutrients; therefore, these vegetables were less vulnerable to insect or fungus attack. Obviously these new methods could not yield the same quality of healthy vegetables.
4: Many big farmers are forced to use chemical fertilizers instead of the organic fertilizer.
My brother knew some of these farmers very well and one day he asked one of them, “Why on earth do farmers use such junk?”
The farmer answered, “ Composted cattle manure is hard to ‘come by’ because cattle farmers hang onto it. The vegetable farmers who do not own cattle have no choice but to buy this fertilizer!”
He went on to explain that most farmers have very little money so cannot afford to buy compost by the ton; hence, they must resort to this chemical-based cheaper fertilizer.
All this is not good news for the consumer, us, who, not realizing to what degree the quality of the vegetables had deteriorated, had turned to buying instead of growing your own vegetables.
For the longest time, the consumer did not realize they were part of a vicious circle. . . . 1) vegetables lacking more and more in nutrients and 2) insecticide/pesticide on our food and spreading in our water table. No wonder cancer and other disease is rampant!
And now for the worst news of all . . .
5. I first became aware of this in January, 2010. Big companies in the US are trying to force farmers to buy and plant GENETICALLY ALTERED SEEDS in their fields/gardens. They want the government to pass a bill which would outlaw organic gardening even in a person’s backyard!
If these companies get their way via certain bills passed at the government level, the farmers would be in a terrible predicament: use genetically altered seeds or lose their farms; use synthetic fertilizers bought from these companies . . .. Just like the song: I owe my soul to the company store.
For a better understanding, you may want to watch the documentary “The Future of Our Food”.
As I was viewing the video, the part about how big companies are planning to sell seeds which have been genetically altered to self destruct after one year of growth made me feel really sorry for the farmers as well as for us consumers!
How will farmers be able to survive? How will we survive if we are not allowed to choose our seeds when growing your own vegetables ? How can seeds be saved for the following year’s crop if they are to self-destruct? How are these plants growing from genetically altered seeds going to affect our health?
To read more about the drawbacks of genetically modified seeds and view the video explaining why the farmers are so extremely concerned and worried, go to http://organicvegetablegardeningguide.com/blog/ and read the article “Genetically Modified Foods Vs Organic Foods”, which was written when certain groups in the US wanted to outlaw organic farming and even outlaw growing your own vegetables in your own back yard.
6.Here’s one last proof that one should either buy organically grown vegetables or grow your own vegetables .
The David Suzuki Foundation released a document, “The Food We Eat” — An International Comparison of Pesticide regulations, October 2006.
Here’s a part of what it says:
“The Foundation made the claim that Canada’s pesticide regulations are among the weakest in the industrialized world. Sixty chemicals used in 1,130 pesticide products are banned in other western industrialized nations, they say.
However, in 2007 Canada’s maximum residue limits on food are significantly lower than the US, the European Union, and Australia.
Canada reports a 10 percent residue on fresh fruit and vegetables, as compared to the US which reports 76 percent.”
~ CFA-Canadian Federation of Agriculture, Currents Events, “CFA Environment and Science Activities” (September 2007) /// http://www.cfa-fca.ca/pages/index.php?main_id=335
I can’t help but wonder: “How much insecticide/pesticide residual are we swallowing as we eat our vegetables bought at the grocery store? ….. and who knows what else we are swallowing!”
Wouldn’t it be to our advantage to return to growing your own vegetables so that you are able to make sure that you are planting non-gmo seeds (i.e. using organic seeds instead) in a healthy soil well supplemented with compost or manure so that very little or no spraying with insecticides/pesticides is needed?
It only makes sense to either buy organically grown vegetables or if at all possible, take a patch of land around the house, add lots of home made compost or manure or both, and begin growing your own vegetables . . .delicious, nutritious, and healthier vegetables . . . in your own little garden.
Through her many years of experience, Marcie has learned that organic gardening is the best way to grow delicious, nutrient-filled vegetables. You can get the complete story about why grow your own vegetables at Growing Your own Vegetables
It’s so cute to see your children playing together so nicely. They might not be playing house like most kids would play, but they may play a game called gardening. Kids make up really cute games when they’re younger and you can tell them all about it before they move out of the house so you can have some memories to share with them.
Kids may get the idea by watching you in the garden but what kids don’t know is that it’s a lot of hard work, but it keeps you busy when you’re not working at your full time job. They may get the idea that that’s what you’re doing is playing outside, so they might want to be gardeners when they’re older so they can play outside too.
It’s time to go get the video camera when you’re watching your children play so nicely together and listening to them talk gardening talk. It’s so cute because you know they get everything they’re talking about from hearing you talk. This is definitely will be one video you will have to show your kids when they’re older.
Since kids at this age are so little and may sometimes get bored with their toys, to release themselves from being bored they may think up some games to play and let their imagination run away with them.
This might also make you feel good as well because as you’re watching your children playing pretend, you think to yourself that they get everything they’re doing by watching you. It must mean a lot because you may think that it could mean that they will grow up and get married and feed their children healthy food straight from their garden.
What’s funny to you is that they know where everything goes and what all belongs in a garden. You might not have taught them anything like that, but they might pick up on it really fast. The fact that they can pick up on things really fast may put you at ease when they start school and would need to learn how to do everything in a classroom.
It may be even impressive for you because they know how to clean up their mess when they’re done. Since that impresses you, see if you can get them to help you around the house. It’s important to learn what your child’s capabilities are at a young age so you can recognize them for it and be proud of them when they’re doing something well.
Once you have their cute little performance all recorded, this would be a great tape to make copies and show the tape to all your family members. You want them to see how great your kids are at pretend gardening. When you’re passing out tapes, don’t forget to save a copy for yourselves because you would want to eventually show your children the little games they played when they were younger and would even want to make tapes for them to show their children later on down the road.
Popular flowers in Canada are Toronto flowers, lilies, and tulips. For birthday flowers or Birthday Flowers choose flowers to express love, friendship, and endearment.
In ancient and modern cultures, the Garden of Eden was and is seen as a paradise filled with flirtatiously sweet flowers, always pregnant fruit trees, refreshing sugar-free waters and perpetual sunshine and moonlight. In short, it was heaven on Earth that remains unparalleled to this day when the descendants of Adam and Eve have almost reverted to public nudity. But that’s neither here nor there.
You can actually recreate the Garden of Eden anywhere you want, when you want and for any reason you want. That’s almost like saying you can have a piece of heaven on your very own patch – or pot – of soil. Here then are the likely and unlikely places to start your very own Garden of Eden.
Your Neighbor’s Backyard
Just because the grass is always greener on the other side, that’s why. Plus, you cannot be bothered with paying the water bills. We kid you not. Seriously speaking, this is a good idea especially when your backyard is a figment of your fertile imagination. Of course, there is neighborly etiquette involved here lest you recreate not the Garden of Eden but the Garden of Strife or someplace like it.
You need to have a contract, even if it is unspoken. For example, lay down the ground rules – sharing of gardening time and expenses, plants to cultivate, splitting of harvest, etcetera. And please do kiss up once in a while. We kid, we kid.
Your Neighborhood’s Empty Lot
There is an inspiring story about the Pat Baker Park in Reno. It was dubbed an instant park because of its completion within two days, all the materials and labor contributed by big businesses and small children alike, of all stripes and colors.
You might think that it’s not as extraordinary as we are making it out to be but keep in mind that it was constructed in 1968, the year when Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, the year when black was black and white was white and there was no intermingling of the two. In short, you might as well be shooting for the moon. If Pat Baker can make a park on donations, why can’t you? Now, there’s a challenge even the snake in the Garden of Eden will tell you to bite and bite big.
Your Dank and Dark Basement
Well, who says that basements have to be dank and dark all the time? It’s scary enough as it is so it’s time to turn it into a haven of flowers, fruits and vegetables. Oh, don’t worry about sunlight because there are artificial lights for this purpose. And if you are not one for handling soil, well, then there’s always hydroponics. It uses mineral-enriched water as soil, artificial lights for sun and plastic containers for ground. And you can theoretically plant anything you want – flowers, fruits and vegetables – thus, transforming your dark and dank basement into an airy and light underground farm of sorts.
The Garden of Eden is not in the Middle East as classicists will have it or in Jackson County, Minnesota as the Mormons will have you believe. You can find it anywhere you have the fertile imagination to let it take root, pun intended.

I was having a game of golf at Nambucca Heads on the New South Wales Mid North Coast of Australia, and my playing partner asked me what was I doing next in life? I had just returned from overseas and I think the locals get a fair bit of chat material from my movements and things I get up to.
“Well”, I replied, “I’m thinking of relocating back to the Gold Coast and asking people to invite me into their gardens”. I explained a lot of us visit or use our gardens but don’t know how to connect with them emotionally or spiritually. I suggested we are moving away from the land (drifting into the cities) and pressures of life forcing us to spend an increasing amount of time in the quest for money and maintaining jobs, family and the like. The garden once central to a family’s home now viewed as a feature, ornament, monument or symbol to bolt onto the home and our manufactured lifestyles.
“Not necessary so”, he replied. “My wife and myself get a fair bit out of our garden but I don’t know how to connect with it”. “It’s something there in the backyard we just spend time in”.
“Do you have a seat in there?”
“No, when I think about it, we haven’t”.
I suggested that’s what I’d like to do after I relocate and not necessarily go about placing seats in every garden (not a bad idea), but try to link people with their surroundings, and in a way I’m practicing the art of connectiveness.
I mentioned, the garden has so much to offer when we view it through Feng Shui eyes and that of Chi. If we can balance a gardens Yin and Yang for example, it takes a more harmonious appeal. By recognising and moderating Sha Chi influences and strengthening Sheng Chi, the garden seems a more receptive and relaxing place. When we garden ‘on the curve’ and recognise the value of some Feng Shui, the garden becomes more alive, has mystery and diversity and is welcoming. I suggested to him, “I want to marry you and your wife with your garden”.
He replied after hitting his drive about 250 metres, (he plays off a handicap of three), “I think you’ve got something there”.
So an opportunity arises and a direction away from all my writing stuff. I think it’s a matter of self confidence to go out there and convince people to see their gardens through different eyes. I can monitor responses through my website and test them with my writings. Basically putting the words into practice and if responses remain as they have been so far, my work has not been wasted and the art of connectiveness a reality for some. Hey, and people are getting away from that manufactured life we’re starting to lead. Good times are ahead.

Feng Shui comes from the Chinese culture. When you talk about Feng Shui in the Garden, you need to keep in mind three important things and these are pond, pool, and fountain. It is important for you to place any of these things in the center of your garden. It is believed that any body of water, whether artificial or natural, can really help to increase the good Chi energy within the house or the garden. It is important to remember that the water should flow and avoid being stagnant because it can attract all the negative energies within your garden or home. According to Feng Shui principles, the best location for a home is near a brook, small hill or a home located near a small river. Anything that is connected to nature and water will attract good energy or the Chi.
It is beneficial to make an effort to beautify the view from the window to make it more attractive because it can help good vibesand energy to come into your home. Your garden should be arranged in an order which is very welcoming to you and to your guests. There are things that might disrupt the overall view of your garden like having bike, garbage can, and tools. These things may disrupt the flow of the positive energy within your home. It is helpful if you will put a bench right after your entrance door because it is practical as well as attractive. If you have a harmonious place in front of your home, it will invite the Chi and will aid in good flow of the Chi to your garden into your home.
A nice Feng Shui Garden should have some herbs, and shrubs of berries within. You need to take time to decide which tree you are going to place inside your garden. Anyone that will enter your home or garden will feel the affection brought by a tree. If you want to feel recharged everyday right after your work, it is best to place a bench under your tree and sit, it will surely recharge your energy.
Your garden should have a protected area. This is for you to create a beautiful landscape scene. You need to set some boundaries to avoid others from destroying your landscape area. You can put a high wall or small hedges to hide it from prying eyes. You can perceive the garden using your senses. The use of colorful flowers and the great smell of herbs will make your garden inviting only for visitors, but also inviting for good energy. Each element that is located within your garden has their own role in bringing joy and peace inside your home.
If you will let your garden be dominated with lots of flowering plants, herbs and trees, you will personally like and enjoy its view. The addition of light at night can also make your Feng Shui garden extraordinarily beautiful.

There are many, many flowers given every single day in honor of something or another. People give them as anniversary presents, congratulatory gifts and at times to show appreciation for all that was done. They are rarely given to men but every now and then, a man appreciates the gift of a flower.
Flowers that group together on plants are used to pollinate, to spread the seeds, of the plant for future production. The main purpose of the blossoms is to pollinate and produce seeds for reproduction. They usually attract pollinators by scent or by their color schemes. Since they are stationary, they rely on birds, bees and other insects to carry the pollen for them.
Some can be very expensive, usually due to their rarity or uniqueness. If it was difficult to find or obtain, it becomes much more special, which always makes the price higher. Bouquets can be bought not only in shops around the world but from personal vendors in some areas and even in grocery stores.
Selling, buying and producing them is done differently all over the world. Some are not found in one country, while they practically take over an area of another.
Some have petals that are attractive only to insects that eat the flesh of dead animals. They even give off the scent of a dead animal in order to attract those insects. There are other blossoms that only bloom at night and attract bats and other night visitors by their scent. These flowers are usually white. They have no need for coloring, as they are not trying to attract anything that is attracted visually.
Some blossoms are regarded as symbols of certain things, such as red roses, which are the blossoms of love and passion, daisies for innocence and lilies as a symbol of life or resurrection. Artists like Van Gogh and Monet have rendered beautiful still paintings of baskets and bouquets. They also have some significance in religious cultures around the world.
Cauliflower and broccoli are members of the flower vegetable family. Artichokes are also considered part of that family. There are many spices, such as Saffron, that are made from dried blossoms that have been ground into powder. Some are processed with other ingredients to make certain spices while others are used pure. A bloom called hops is used to flavor beer. Wine flavoring and honey products are also made from blooms. Consumers regularly purchase tea that is flavored with such blossoms as jasmine, chamomiles, roses and chrysanthemums. They do not supply a good deal of nutrition when they are consumed but they definitely add flavoring and aroma to many normal foods and drinks.
Flowers have been used by humans for several different purposes, not just to make rooms and landscapes look pretty but also as food and apologetic gifts. When a man is seen picking up a bouquet of flowers, there is generally an occasion happening that would merit such a thing. Men apologize with them and candy hoping their women will forgive and forget.
