A plant can not survive without light; it is a vital factor in its development just like water. Without sufficient light or the lack of it would spell failure to your hobby or occupation of growing plants. It is therefore very crucial that lighting must be on the priority list of every gardener in order to assure its successful growing of plants. If you are the gardener and planning to grow your plants using a greenhouse, you have to start evaluating and researching what type of lighting would you be using in order to maximize their usefulness as well as making a great savings on your electricity bill as these lighting fixtures would remain part and parcel of your regular expenses. There are various things that you must be alerted if you desire to find the best lighting system for your dream greenhouse.

First is to determine the quantity and kind of lighting fixtures you will need and you have to sit down and evaluate your growing schedules of plants since there are different needs of light for every plant. Fruit tress, tall plants and flowers require more light than other certain plants and therefore would require sufficient number of lighting fixtures. Normally, outdoor greenhouses need around 25 watts per square foot to start with and base from these data you could start computing initially how many square feet is your greenhouse and divide it with this factor and initially you will arrive at the number of lighting materials you would need. While if you will build your greenhouse inside a structure, you would need not less than double the light you need when you have an outdoor greenhouse.

Second, since the kind of rays from the lighting fixture you would use are factors that influence the growth of your plants, you have to study how you would allocate a specific light that emits the kind of light that your plant needs to develop normally. Just like the fruit bearing trees and flowers, if you want them to grow and bear fruits and flower accordingly, you have to use high pressure sodium lights as their rays are of red spectrum and they induce the growth hormones of your plants. It would be different if you are cultivating green leafy vegetables for example which grow best under blue spectrum light waves so instead of sodium lights what you need now are metal halide that provide best for this kind of light.

Thirdly, your lights must not be too hot for your plants or else they would die, as there are some lights that are too warm than other lighting fixtures such as the incandescent bulbs. These incandescent lamps could supply the sufficient lighting needs of plants aside from the extra hot they emit and the best option to take is to use fluorescent lights which heat is lesser than the incandescent bulb. It is the best approach to compare each type of lighting fixtures as to the degree of heat they emit before deciding which lighting fixtures you would use.

The system of growing plants in suspended air like orchids will surprise us no more as we are used to it which is called aeroponics and there is a revolutionized approach to agriculture which though perfected in the 1940s is now gaining ground and big producers are adopting it-Hydroponics. This procedure was publicly introduced in 1929 by William Frederick Gericke, a Professor at the University of California in Berkeley, a technique of producing plants without using soil but it thrives on inactive medium and mineral nutrient solution thru water. The inert medium to carry the plant while suspended in the water are varied ranging from coconut husk or coir, expanded clay, possolanic lassenite, rock wood, perlite, pumice, vermiculite, sand, gravel, brick shards, polystyrene packing peanuts and wood fiber and the most widely accepted and commonly used material are the rock wool.

The use of rock wool is favored on several grounds. One, rock wool is an inactive material which is not drainage free but likewise provides a recalculating system. Second advantage is that it is of light material and pathogens free, contains low cations exchange capacity (CEC) that facilitates the instant availability of water and nutrients. Rock wool which is made from molten rock and created into cotton-candy like fibers is not reduced by microbiological action and transformed into a fibrous medium that is produced in varying sizes and orientations. Third, rock wool which has a higher density level improves the distribution of moisture and nutrients as well as wicking and drives the root to spread out on the other spaces of the medium which benefit the plant to grow faster because of sufficient nutrient being channeled to the planted area of the medium. And fourth, rock wool after usage can be reused again and turned into bricks or into another set of new rock wool again or it may be mix with soil since it is made of natural rocks and a significant amount of fertilizer is still there inside the medium.

After setting on what medium to use, the next important thing in hydroponics is the water as it would be the medium to carry the mineral nutrient solution. In plants too much and little supply of water are both unfavorable and in Hydroponics water distribution or need is being balanced so that excess water is drained and see to it that what is required is provided. The water is also re-circulated or extensively aerated for oxygen generation and to eliminate anoxic levels which generally drown the root system in traditional soil medium. In the traditional system of using soil as planting medium, a gardener must be near perfect to determine the exact water requirement of the plant, because too much water would bar the plant to oxygen access while little water would incapacitate the plant to move nutrients from its root to other parts since the solution is usually in water.

The mineral nutrients solution are dissolved and mix with the water and normally are inorganic and ionic form and are distributed to the plant in a controlled procedure that was studied based on the area and needs of the plant to be supplied.

For those who appreciate being outdoors nothing beats getting into the garden and enjoying a bit of fine weather. For some gardens this is only practical during the summer time but for those with some all weather areas, the garden can be both more attractive and a whole lot more usable. A spacious patio and footpaths made from natural stone makes all year round use of the garden a possibility.

As autumn comes to a close and plants start to die back in preparation for the winter, many people almost have to say goodbye to their gardens for a few months because they don’t have any practical way of using it when the weather turns colder and wetter. Lawns become damp and perhaps muddy with worm casts, fallen leaves are left to create more untidiness and the garden ceases to be that attractive lure it once was earlier in the year. But during winter the garden doesn’t have to be that no-go area many people assume it is. Crisp winter days can be wonderful times to get outside into the garden when wildlife is easier to spot and some plants, especially trees and shrubs have their own beauty.

Owning a garden is not without its costs. First of all a property with a large garden will have attracted a premium price when it was first purchased, not to mention the extra stamp duty the government would have applied to that price. Then there is the cost of maintining a nice garden. Of course if you look after your own garden the man hours of work are effectively free, but gardening does takes time and large gardens even more so. Then there is the expense of plants, fertilizers, weedkillers and machinery. Given all that financial outlay wouldn’t it make sense to use the garden as much as possible? After all, had you spent a significant sum of money purchasing and maintaining a nice car, you wouldn’t take too kindly to being made to leave it in the garage for 6 months of the year. So getting the most out your garden space by being able to use it all year round makes perfect sense.

The key to achieving a year-round garden is creating spaces that can be used whatever the weather and that normally means footpaths for convenient access and patio areas. Normally the material of choice for an attractive patio is natural stone and there is a wide choice of stone alternatives available including Indian Natural Stone that is available in sandstone and limestone variants as well as Cotswold and York Stone from the UK.

Natural stone can be purchased in a range of pre-cut sizes that lend themselves to creating all manner of designs and layouts. A good natural stone company will often provide a choice of ready-made designs or can create a custom design for your own particularly patio area. They will also offer advice on how to lay the stones and may even be able to recommend a choice of local landscaping contractors.

There are also ready-made packs of natural stone that can be laid as a stone circle, perhaps as a feature in a lawn or in a garden sun spot that can be used frequently during autumn and winter. Indian stone setts are also available which can be used not only for patios but also for pathways and driveways. The use of natural stone for a patio makes it both a useful and attractive feature and if pathways also use the same stone, the whole garden becomes a place that everyone will want to spend more time. For that completely natural look, Indian natural stone can also be used for wall copings and even swimming pool copings and corners.

So create a natural stone patio area and don’t neglect your garden once the summer is over. Your garden will look better for it and the investment will add value to your property too.

Gordon lives for garden design and works with suppliers of natural stone in Surrey to showcase what can be achieved with yorkstone, sandstone and natural stone paving. The beauty of natural Indian stone is a sustainable and attractive option for garden patios and footpaths.

In order to choose the proper rodent pest control, one must first identify the type of pest that is a nuisance. There are several types of rodents that infest homes around the United States, however the largest problem is with rats and mice. There are other rodents such as gophers, moles, and even armadillos.

When choosing a rodent pest control there are important factors that one must take into consideration before deciding on how to remove or eradicate the problem rodents. You must also think about any pets or children that are in or around your home when determining a method for eradication, as their safety is very important as well.

Identifying which rodent is a problem is of great importance when trying to choose the proper rodent pest control. A couple things that will help you tell the difference between a rat and a mouse are the size differences and the tail differences.

The tail of a rat looks more like a leather whip, whereas the tail of a mouse looks softer and more delicate. Obviously rats tend to be larger than mice; however this is not always the case. The best way to figure out what type of rodent is a problem, consider purchasing a live trap, this way you are sure to get a good look at it, as rodents are hard to see when on the move.

When dealing with moles, gophers, and armadillos it might come down to simply out smarting the rodent, as they tend to be quite smart. Moles and gophers can be a bit tricky, but one of the non-poisonous methods is flushing them out.

In order to flush a mole or gopher out you first have to locate the active tunnels, then using a garden hose let the water run for fifteen to thirty minutes. It is easier to get rid of armadillos, simple disturb the area around the nest and feel safe. The other rodent pest control option is to uses live traps or bait stations.

Live traps are a type of catch and release trap used for all different types of rodents, including rats and mice. These methods consist of either a glue strip with a highly bonding adhesive which the rodent sticks to, or a cage which you use a nontoxic bait, and it traps the rodent until proper removal.

The bait stations are a great because they are available in so many shapes and sizes. Simply place the bait (poisonous or non poisonous) and let the trap inside either catch or kill the rodent, depending on the bait station you choose.

All in all there are several types of rodent pest control to choose from to rid your home of unwanted guests. Make sure that you identify the rodent that is a problem, which will help you to choose the proper method of control.

There are some other factors to consider such as do you have pets that would be able to get into the bait stations that are around your home or yard. Factoring in children is also an important as well. No matter which one you decide upon, contacting a professional is the best way to ensure that your rodent problem will be taken care of completely.

Solar garden lighting system is one of the best ideas to brighten your garden’s beauty and attractiveness and also to provide other benefits to the owner. While the cost of acquiring and installing them would require a sitting down to compute the cost and provide the budget for the lighting materials. The cost alone would put the gardener into a quandary whether to install them or search an alternative lighting fixtures. But experience dictates that solar are the most sought after in this type of electrical lighting system because of their beneficial lighting features despite the cost involve in acquiring them. The attendant increase in your electric consumption must also be considered before finally deciding to buy and install them.

These solar lighting fixtures are good for your landscaped areas to focus on rocked designed contours of your garden and also to provide lighting to your path walks along the garden and there are solar ornamental designed lamps that you can be draped in bushes to make them lively even after the sun has already settled down or at its sunset level. These great outdoor lighting fixtures are also used to give added freshness to your green leafy vegetables if you want to focus some of them on your plants to show off your best produce.

You may also consider using other types of lighting fixtures for your pools and ponds underwater or for their underside lighting requirements to create an impressive colors and clarity in your bodies of water using electrically operated lights. You can choose from a variety of designs and colors which could be programmed on the beat of the music or at a choose interval of a minute or any fraction of time. But again, these are added chunks on your budget but they would be worth the cost on you investment if you are on a commercial undertaking. If you are not, and on a purely personal liking or hobby, you may save on trimming down their numbers and sophistication and choose the best item that could give the lesser cost of maintenance and just concentrate on other creative ideas that would further enhance the beauty of your garden.

Other water-using fixtures in your garden such as fountains and grottos can further enhance their beauty by using spotlights or camouflaged illuminating lights that are focused or at a programmed time also. Another use of these various electrical lighting fixtures is also equally important in the security of your area against illegal intruders during the night. First, they must be adequately lighted and your perimeter area is a priority and that the installation must be a few meters away. Secondly, the dark corners and alleys of the garden where intruders may hide or take refuge in case of detection must have adequate light.

With all these lighting fixtures in place and the related cost involved in putting and maintaining them, your garden would be a paradise in the middle of the night and your family and friends as well as visitors alike would be enjoying with much happiness in your place and you will be equally rewarded with those smiles of approval in their faces.

Due to various diseases that were found to be related to the use or exposure to pesticides and herbicides, the demand for organic vegetables have been on the steady rise and any agricultural product that is identified to organic farming is given premium by the consuming public who are willing to pay an extra price. For this reason, some commercial agricultural firms do not use pesticides or herbicides and prefer to adopt integrated pest management approaches to solve their problem along this aspect of their operations so as to attract the consumers to patronize their produce. One vital qualification to obtain a certification that your produce is organic is that they must be soil cultured before you will be issued the certification by the US Federal government. In some states in the U.S.A., there are conflicting requirements wherein some states require the soil as a medium in planting while others do not before a certificate of organic farming is issued and for this reason, there are some states that issue certifications that hydroponics is also organic farming.

Aside from the fact that hydroponics requires no soil to implement, adopting it in your farming procedures helps in saving water as you will only consume 1/20 of the total amount of water if you are using the conventional form of farming in producing the same quantity of produce in your farm. Constant heavy watering activities in the farm can impact the water table as well as the run-off of chemicals being used in the farms which is very remote if you are practicing hydroponics as it does not only minimizes the use of water but it can easily measures the quantity of water that is being used and that which is being returned to be reused. This procedure would be a definite advantage for the farmer who would be more than grateful to save a considerable amount on his water bill consumptions thus increasing his profit at the end of the crop season.

Since the watering requirement of the plant is not a problem in hydroponics farming, the other factor for plant growth is light which could be augmented with lighting systems that must be designed as to the stages of growth of your plants. For those at the growing stage you may use metal halide only, while for growing, flowering or blooming stages, you need the high pressure sodium lights in order to prolong the day or to supply additional light to the natural light of the sun if it is not sufficient.

While the lighting system might be good for your plants, you must carefully evaluate if such attachments of lighting fixtures are environmentally good both to your plants and to the farming hands working at the farm since metal halide and sodium lights while good for the plants are relatively harmful to the skin without protective gear and continuous exposure would result to cancer of the skin. Likewise, maintaining both lighting systems for the farm would be costly for the farmer as the two requires large amount of electricity in operating them so that your operating cost might cause a significant dent on your profits.

The environment is really on its changing mood as we have seen in the summer season of 2010/2011 where widespread flooding has occurred in many areas and the recorded abnormal snowfalls of heavier than the normal occurrences of previous years during winter periods have also aggravated to the saturation of our soil conditions. These abnormal situations have greatly affected the nutrients of the soil which we shall be discussing in this article so that you may understand what to do to keep your crops growing.

The soil condition is dependent upon the availability of the nutrients it carries as the crop you are growing in the soil absorbs what is the available nutrients in it. So if there is an excessive flooding in your area, in most probability the nutrients in your soil is affected and in such cases, you have to act accordingly so you may know what is likely to have been lost or leached by the flood instead of waiting its effect on your plants which would show off the nutrient deficiency symptoms as you go on. And what do we mean by leached or leaching.

Leaching happens when there is too much flooding in such a way that there is no more room for the soil to hold any moisture and the water is getting to be pushed downwards to the root zone and takes with it the nutrients. It occurs at different magnitude and varies with the types of soil and in accordance with its capacity to hold water, so that nutrients are less to leach in clay than from sandy type of soils. Aside from flooding, the other factor that affects leaching is the amount of water needed by the plant. Listed below are the various nutrients needed by the plant and how they are leached due to the factors affecting leaching.

1. Nitrogen – Nitrogen comes in different forms such as ammonium, nitrate and nitrite and it is the nitrite form that can be easily leached from a water saturated soil. This nutrient comes from animal manure and decaying plant materials or fertilizers and is lost substantially when the soil suffers saturated conditions. It would occur rapidly if the soil is coarse textured sandy but it is slower when the soil type is loam and clay soils because water moves slower on these types of soils. There is gaseous loss of nitrogen when soil microorganisms are active while reducing nitrate when the soil is saturated although soil microorganisms are not usually effective when the soil is saturated even on decomposing organic matter and this slows down the release of nitrogen from these fertilizer materials. However, other nitrogen like ammonium does not leach since it is attached to the soil and prevents going with the water movements.

2. Phosphorous, Sulphates and Calcium – After the flooding, the beneficial root fungi called mycorrhizae which most plants are associated with are often reduced and would result to their handicapped to reached for phosphorous which are reduced dramatically under wet situations. The other mineral nutrients needed by plants which are sulphates and calcium are equally prone to leaching especially during flooding of the soil. After finding out the nutrient deficiency of the soil where your plant gets its food, it would be easier to you to feed it properly without venturing into a guessing game.

The spirit of a gardener is not dampened by the lack of big spaces where to exercise his hobby of planting more so with the unavailability of space because the available space is concreted so that planting vegetables or herbs is next to impossible. Not anymore with potted plants, the gardener has come up with this technique of using containers to plant his pet crops including herbs which are now the favorites of most kitchens as added ingredients to most healthy foods . You can now plant on used containers big or small or you may buy the standard sizes for house plants which could be used for other planting materials like herbs and other vegetables with tall bushes like eggplants and okras.

While the open space is lacking in the ground material as it is all cemented space, the garden soil must come from outside of the area and has to be patiently put in individual containers that might count to several hundred or thousands. A compost material is a very good adds on to the garden or potting soil depending on the number of planting materials available to be filled. You must have a separate bigger container not less than a couple of feet square meters or if you can buy a seedling tray would be more preferable. Your containers or little plastic pots must be group according to sizes so that you may have a nice looking arrangement of your pots and plants according to the types or classes of vegetables and herbs you have planted.

When your seedlings are ready to be transplanted, start the day with mashing the soil if it has been for a long time in each individual containers to accommodate the newly transferred seedling to adopt or the new medium and daily you have to water it if needed until the newly transplanted seedling recovers and start a new life process on the container. A sufficient sunshine is needed for the plant to grow rapidly and a protective shed must be provided as shield from the harsh and hot weather that might stunt its growth. An organic fertilizer must be at hand coming from your own compost if you have one to supply the needed nutrients and make the plants grow faster with a robust stand that would give you satisfaction for the efforts you have put in.

The provision of organic fertilizer could come from your own making by having your own organic fertilizer processing area to assure that your gardening is free from synthetic fertilizer which is frown upon by health conscious individuals, since several studies have proven that vegetables reared on organic fertilizers are far more nutritious and safer than those grown with the use o f synthetic fertilizer.

You may start putting up your own vermiculture project so that a continuous supply of organic fertilizer is readily available to you whom are easy to propagate and maintain as this African night crawler, the type of worms use in sericulture multiply and produce organic fertilizers rapidly. It would excite you each morning when you see your plants have grown beyond your expectations.

Bonsai is a gardening technique whereby nature’s designs in trees is being curve and contained by man with the use of containers and this art of tending miniature tree was traced to have been practiced in China more than two thousand years ago and is continuously turning many people around the globe to try it as their hobby and source of livelihood for others. If you are not quite familiar with this art of growing big but dwarfed trees inside your homes or in your gardens, try these guidelines to keep your bonsai alive and bear fruits under your caring hands.

1.If your bonsai was just recently delivered to you as a present or you have just purchased it, water it at once and keep observing and expect that its leaves would turn yellow after a couple of weeks after arrival. This is natural as your bonsai is adjusting to conditions prevailing in your place, just flick the leaves off and be careful not to pull them.

2. See to it that your bonsai is watered every other day during summer the whole year round and remember that the procedure in watering bonsai is by dipping it in water, keep it in moist condition always and do not allow it to dry up.

3. Choose the proper location of your bonsai inside your home as it needs sufficient sunlight but frowns on putting it directly on midday sun, observe carefully your bonsai when it starts to shed off some leaves and that signals that you must change its location and look for another best spot.

4. Fertilizers. Bonsai loves lots of food and it must be fed once every two weeks during summer and one a month during winter, feed it with phostrogen tomato feed or bonsai food especially formulated for these type of trees and be sure to apply the food only after you have immersed in water your bonsai. You must be sure to follow the feeding instructions so that you will not overfeed your bonsai that would result to well expose leaves to the sun.

5. In pruning your bonsai, follow the original shape and don’t deviate, just cut off the extended shoots to preserve the original look and do it regularly during the year especially during summer when the tree grows faster.

6. Your bonsai must be repotted every two or three years if possible during springtime, just trim away some portion of the roots and change the old soil.

7. When you failed to water your bonsai regularly, the leaves would turn brown and crinkly, just let the leaves fall at their own time and go back and follow strictly the instructions on how to water it by immersion and keep it moist all the time, while yellow leaves would tell you that you are almost drowning your plant as you have overwatered it, stick to the watering guide to avoid these unwanted signals.

The above guidelines are easy to implement but most of the times are neglected resulting in the untimely death of the small tree in your house that reminds you of bigger natural things turning small with the use of your hands, a feat only a true gardener could do.
