Water fountains add life and interest to a space. That’s what makes them a great indoor and outdoor decoration. A water fountain can be a good focal point for your living space or workplace and it has the ability to transform a room into a more inviting and cozy atmosphere. Because of their popularity, you can find all kinds of fountains for the size and price you are looking for. Selecting a nice fountain may sound exciting, but it should not end there. To add years to your water fountain, you need to take proper care of your investment by providing proper fountain care and maintenance.

Because indoor fountains are not exposed to harsh weather conditions, as well as dirt and debris, it doesn’t take a lot to keep them running smoothly for a long time. Nonetheless, you should keep these things in mind to make the most of your wall, tabletop or floor fountain.

First of all, it is highly encouraged to use distilled water on your fountain instead of tap water. The reason for this is that regular tap water contains minerals and contaminants that can cause build-up and eventually clog your fountain’s pump. The pump is the mechanism that allows water to flow on your fountain. A well-maintained pump will keep your fountain functioning properly.

You should also make sure that the pump is completely submerged underwater to prevent it from burning out. This is one of the most important things you should remember. Check the water level regularly because it is natural for water to evaporate. The rate of evaporation varies according to the humidity in the air. The drier the air, the faster you will lose water. To maintain the water level, simply add small amounts of water daily. This is preferable over adding large amounts of water all at once to keep the level more consistent.

It is also good practice to change the water at least once a month to prevent algae and mineral build-up. Algae growth is a common problem in a water fountain especially when it is exposed to bright light so some people opt to place them in the shade. Otherwise, you can use regular dish soap, bleach or white vinegar to clean it. Soak them in white vinegar before you wash them to remove algae easier.

Additionally, make it a habit to clean your fountain periodically. In addition to cleaning the fountain’s exterior, it is of utmost importance to keep the pump clean. Check the manufacturer’s instructions before taking the pump apart though. It is prone to clogging because the water is constantly flowing through it. Cleaning the pump may simply entail removing clogged debris or may require soaking it in a vinegar solution to break down mineral deposits.

These simple recommendations will keep your fountain running for longer. It doesn’t take more than a few hours every few months to do these things but you will definitely be making a difference on its life span, letting you enjoy it for more years to come.

Though fiberglass swimming pools have become very popular today and a lot of people are considering them over other more conventional pool options, the truth is that they aren’t perfect. There are several ways in which they are flawed. Before investing in fiberglass swimming pools, you should know these limitations so that you know you get a good deal.

1. The biggest problem, perhaps, is the fact that you cannot drain the water from these pools easily. If you want to do this, you have to remove all water with a pump and then replace it using a hose or something similar. This is a lot of effort. But, in any case, the manufacturers of fiberglass swimming pools do not advise removing the water at all; otherwise, there is a chance that the fiberglass might buckle due to the sudden removal of pressure. When the water from it is removed, then the groundwater from the surrounding area tries to enter into the fiberglass structure. This sudden influx of water could crack the fiberglass.

2. You should also keep in mind that fiberglass swimming pools are prefabricated. They are made in factories and then brought to your home and installed. There are many difficulties involved here. First, since they are prefabricated, you really don’t have your say over the design, structure and even size of the pool. Second, they will need to be transported to your place. This will at least require a proper passage for the truck. Nothing should obstruct the large pool on the truck between the place where it ships from to the place where you want to install it.

3. Also, since they are prefabricated, you have a few standard sizes to choose from. This restricts your options.

4. You don’t need to maintain your fiberglass swimming pools much, but you will definitely need to spend on reorienting them after every few years. Unlike concrete, they don’t adhere to the swimming pool. They are prone to slipping and need to be readjusted accordingly. However, once installed, you don’t have to think about another readjustment for several years. That could be a hassle, though, especially because you will need to call a professional to do it.

5. Fiberglass swimming pools are also limited in their options in that you cannot perform all the sporting things you want to do in them. It is not advisable to dive into these pools, for instance. Some people, who are avid swimmers, may feel restricted in these pools.

6. Apart from that, there are people who feel that pools made of fiberglass aren’t the ‘real’ thing. These pools don’t conform to the traditional notion of swimming pools, and people who think like that will never be able to be happy in their fiberglass models.

So, keep all these things in mind if you are considering fiberglass swimming pools. These pools aren’t bad—in fact, they can be quite the rage today. But you need to be practical about making your decisions about them. Look into their drawbacks, and then make an intelligent decision based on what you want.

Helpful Hints For Garden Design

Author: AdrianaNotton

Gardens are like homes in that they can have many different atmospheres or styles. The garden design may have historical influences or develop as a result of regional aspects. While not copying an idea slavishly, they can provide inspiration and be adapted to any particular site.

When creating a style in your garden, be sensitive to the scale and mood of the surrounding buildings and landscape. Observe the relationship between different elements of the house such as windows and doors when defining their relationship with garden elements such as flower beds, trees, pools and so on. It’s also important to get the proportions of the garden elements in sync as well.

You can create and change perspectives by playing with the horizontal and vertical lines of different areas such as terraces, paths and beds. To make the garden seem longer, accentuate vertical lines, and to make it seem wider do the same with the horizontals. Skillful placement of trees and tall shrubs can enhance the effects. You can also draw attention to a particular spot, either inside or outside the territory, by manipulating lines and curves.

Any materials used in the construction of paths, paved areas or fencing etc. should blend in with the house and its surroundings. If you find it hard deciding what is appropriate, look at the problem from the other side. Decide what is inappropriate, and by a process of deduction, you should arrive at a favorable solution. Try to reflect the interior design of the house in color and style. That makes the two parts seem as one and provides a very soothing view.

In all of this, do not forget how you relate to the plot. Your garden should reflect your own personality. If you are an informal, relaxed type, you’ll be happy to have plants that overflow bed edges and so on, while if you are of a tidy nature, you’ll want everything just so and neat. Also, don’t forget about practical requirements. A person with a young family will want something different from a couple who are retired. For example, a large pond would suit the tranquility of the latter, but be dangerous for the former.

You also need to consider the maintenance aspect both in time and volume of work. If your time is limited, trees, shrubs, ground cover and perennials are the answer. If you have more than ample time, you can enjoy the delights that annuals and more specialized specimens can bring.

When it comes to planting, keep it simple. It is too easy to crowd out a small area with too many different varieties. This can give a cluttered look. For a simpler, more refined look, limit the species in number and type.

Read lots of catalogues and look at other gardens before making any final decisions. The time spent researching will save a lot of backache and disappointment later on. When you think you know what you want, put it all down on paper in a scale drawing. That way, you will get a good idea as to what works and what doesn’t, before wasting any time and money.

Phalaenopsis Orchid Care

Author: JordiRibal

When we take a look at the several orchid species we can easily find at the flower shop, we can be almost sure that one at least of the orchid flowers we have perceived is a Phalaenopsis. They are almost everywhere: in fancy hotels, at some ceremonies, and mothers used to have them on the mother’s day. Phalaenopsis are very common and a great amount of orchid growers call them “phal orchids”.

Phalaenopsis Orchids are also called Phal Orchids by orchids growers. They constitute one of the most popular orchid species nowadays. In fact, chances are that the orchids you watched last week at that fancy hotel or the fair orchids your aunt was given on the mother’s day were phalaenopsis (even if you might had never heard about phal orchids up to now!)

Phalaenopsis orchids are the option for many starters that begin to grow their own orchid flowers, because they are very easy to have. We might say that they are, perhaps, the easiest orchid flowers to grow and care for.

Indeed, lots of people who begin growing their orchids at home or in their gardens prefer phalaenopsis orchids, since this species is not very choosy and they can be grown fairly easily with a little care.

Nonetheless, phal orchids, as other species and types of orchids, request a little care and attention from us. Particularly, we must bear in mind the right amount of water and light they need.

While a good deal of light is crucial for our phalaenopsis orchid to be “happy”, it should be a shady or indirect light. If we grow our phalaenopsis inside our house, it is recommended to set the plant near a window looking south or east so that it receives the kind of light it requires. At any rate, the phalaenopsis orchid plant must not be exposed to the direct rays of the sun, especially to the hard rays of the afternoon sun.

If it is not possible to place the orchid plant near the windows, no problem, as phalaenopsis orchids have an extraordinary capacity to adapt themselves, so that they can grow healthily under artificial lights. As long as they can have sufficient hours of light, we can place our phalaenopsis orchid under fluorescent or even grow lights. Only make sure that your phalaenopsis is set, at least, at one or two feet away from the light source.

Regarding water, we must know that phalaenopsis orchids like to be watered a little more frequently than other orchid plants like, for example, oncidiums. Howevwe, it is also important for us to know that the orchid media must have very good drainage; otherwise the roots of our orchid could get rot. A good solution is to have our phal orchid sitting in bark and feel the pot from time to time to make sure that it is not getting completely dry. When the bark is nearly dry, it is time for our orchid to get more water.

The residents of Atlanta are enjoying a city with a lot of trees. These trees don’t just calm us from stress but at the same time, they give us that shade when we want a walk around the block. However, some developments around us can lead to tree removals and when that happens, we need to secure a permit to determine if such removal is really necessary.

Atlanta, GA mayor’s office issued out a directive way back in September 23rd, 2010 which states that tree removal permits must be posted for public inspection on the site. The neighborhood has a say as well it it’s really necessary to have a tree removed.

One of the main reasons why a tree needs removal is that sometimes they get plucked out from the ground which is caused by root disturbances. This is often caused by extreme digging close to trees as a result of a construction activity or installation of cables and pipes. Street widening projects, putting a new building or converting old residential places into parking lots also contribute to a possible root disturbance on trees.

Young trees are very easy to relocate and transplant in a new place where possible disturbance on the root will be avoided. However, for bigger trees that have a wide root system that spreads on the ground, it’s a different story. Damaging some roots can lead to a possible loss of the old tree. In addition to this, older tree have less regenerative factors to help them survive root damage.

Symptoms of root damage don’t happen overnight. In some cases, it may take years before it will manifest on the affected tree. Residents even go to the extent of putting fences on the trees they like to preserve but this is immaterial if the roots of these mammoths are affected. Any deep digging that’s 10 feet away from a tree can lead to a damage rate of 30 percent of the root system. Installations of cables and pipes can disconnect the root system on a specific side of a tree. In the long run, you’ll just see twigs and shoots drying up, branches will follow then the tree itself dies. The next thing that will come to your mind will be tree removal.

Before any possible root disturbances can happen it’s best to have it checked thoroughly first to minimize possible risks of loosing that tree. To avoid going to the extent of calling an Atlanta tree removal service, it would be best to have the roots of specific trees checked prior to digging. Oaks and cottonwood trees are very sensitive to root disturbances while American elms have a strong resistance to it.

The trees that we plant today will be enjoyed by generations to come. As our lifestyles change, we have to consider them as part of our environment. Without them, there’s a strong chance that we ourselves won’t exist. As long as we keep them alive and healthy, they will surely be loved by the next generations of our family lines.

Controlling Pond Algae Growth

Author: JoelStephens

No one looks forward to seeing a green pond out their back window. The reason most of us put in our pond is to enjoy the ecosystem that’s created. We want to watch the fish swim, nurture the plants to grow and maybe even hear the bubbling of the water fall as it cascades gently over the rocks into the water, bringing oxygen and life to fish. but every once in a while we look at our back windows and we see a greenish tent to our water. Our fish become harder to see and this kind of bums us out. But what can we do about it?

The first thing we need to do is understand why algae grows. Believe it or not is a very natural part of any aquatic ecosystem. Sunlight is the main catalyst of photosynthesis and when it strikes the water we should expect nothing but algae growth. Sunlight is like filet mignon to algae. Absolutely tasty! Plus, it increases the temperature of your pond’s water, fostering a rapid growth environment. This is the way of nature. most ponds need a certain amount of algae for the flora and find out within to grow properly. But an excessive amount of algae growth can be detrimental.

The most important thing in any ecosystem is balance. The best way to balance your pond is with submerged plants like anacharis, cabomba and/or hornwort. These plants are essential to any aquatic environment because they compete with algae for the nutrients in your water. They are also what are called oxygenating plants, releasing fresh oxygen into your pond water. Anacharis in particular also works as a wonderful filter, catching and holding suspended material in your pond. These plants are fertilized by fish waste and carbon dioxide, and many fish actually eat them. Don’t worry though, the plants do grow pretty fast, and in a normal environment, the fish can’t keep up. Just make sure you don’t have too many fish when compared with how many plants are in your pond.

Another method of balance is the utilization of floating plants. Floating plants are usually plants with broad shaped leaves that “float” on the surface of your ponds water. Not only are they beautiful, but they also limit direct sunlight and create wonderful shade for your fish, keeping the overall water temperature down. They curb the growth of algae and provide your fish with a natural food source. Java moss, floating hearts and giant water snowflake are just a few of the types of plants that will work well in this application.

As you can see the control of algae is not a very difficult. If thought through logically (and if you understand the basics of algae growth) you can see that there are many deterrents that are quite effective. remember, a little bit of algae is not a bad thing. A number of goldfish and bottom feeders need algae to survive. But let’s not go overboard. No one wants their pond looking like a bowl full of green Jell-O.

There’s nothing more unattractive than a pond full of plants and fish, when you can’t see the plants or fish. There are many factors that contribute to murky water in a garden pond. What are some of these? It seems like a question that should have a fairly simple answer, but unfortunately, nothing in life is truly simple. Let’s explore some of those things and see if we can find some simple solutions to them.

Muddy water is not only ugly to look at, but it can be very harmful to aquatic life. It can inhibit the growth of fish and plants through the limiting of sunlight penetration, increasing overall water temperature and reducing oxygen and plankton production. Clear ponds are capable of producing healthier fish because they allow the fish living in them to find food easier and breath without as much effort.

In order to solve the problem of water clarity, you must first ask the question, “What color is my water?” You will find that your pond will usually have either a greenish or brownish tint. Greenish water is most always caused by an excessive amount of algae growth, while brownish water is often caused by dirt, dust or other particulates infiltrating your ecosystem.

Excessive algae growth is not a problem this article is intended to solve. Maybe another day. Muddy ponds are on today’s menu and are usually the result of soil erosion and/or leaves and debris breaking down in the water. The best solution to a problem is always the prevention of the problem. Terracing the land around the pond and securing the soil will stop a lot of future headaches before they occur. Planting grasses or vegetation around your pond will work wonders.

If you are beyond this point, try applying aluminum sulfate to your garden pond. “Alum” as it is called will bind the particles within your water, pulling them out of a suspended state. Be careful though as it will also lower the pH level of your water. Make sure that you add chemicals to your pond slowly, so as not to shock the plants and fish living there. Next, consider slowly vacuuming out the sediment (after it is bound by the alum) from the bottom of the pond. When vacuuming out your pond, try as hard as possible to not “shock” the fish. This can lead to them getting sick or even possibly dying. Some fish can be very fragile.

Remember, chemicals will only fix the current state of the water. If the problem of erosion still exists, you will be fighting this battle again. Muddy garden pond water is not only unattractive, but it can be very dangerous to the flora & fauna within your backyard ecosystem. Strive for pond water clarity and you will find that a multitude of headaches will go away! Your plants and fish will be able to breathe easier, eat better and live in a much more stable environment. Plus, as an added bonus, you will be able to see them through the water!

Balancing Pond PH the Easy Way

Author: JoelStephens

In order to determine how important pH can be to our ponds, we need to first remember what pH is. This means we have to go all the way back to high school chemistry class. Stick with me for a minute…I promise it will not be that painful!

According to the Carlsberg Laboratory, pH stands for the power of hydrogen. It is basically a scale from 0 to 14 that measures the acidity or basicity level of an aqueous solution (a liquid with water as its base). Pure water is said to be neutral, having a pH of 7. A solution with a pH of less than 7 is said to be acidic while a solution with a pH greater than 7 is said to be basic (or alkaline). A number of things can raise or lower the overall pH of your garden pond or Koi pond. Fresh rain water can alter pH as can the plants you have in your water. That’s right, I said even the plants living and breathing in your pond will alter its pH. When carbon dioxide is made in the water by plants, it converts into carbonic acid and this brings down the pH into the acid range. There is good news though! If you have rocks or cement that your pond water is interacting with your pH should be balancing fairly well. Limestone (calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate), clam/oyster shells and grouting along your ponds edge all impart “carbonates” into your pond water, raising its pH levels.

As it relates to garden ponds, a safe range for your flora or fauna would be anywhere between 7.0 and 7.5. In order to test the pH level in your garden pond, I would recommend picking up a standard pool testing kit for $5 or so at your local “sell everything” store. They are very easy to use and last a pretty long time.

Usually, a pond owner shouldn’t need to do anything to their water to maintain a stable pH. Remember water is naturally neutral. There are some regions where adjusting your pH may be necessary. If you find you have a lot of limestone in the ground around you, this may be a concern. If adjustment is necessary, remember, only adjust your pH levels in your pond about .2 units per day. Sudden changes in your ponds pH could result in the illness of even the death of your plants and fish.

Another important point to remember is that low pH (pond water acidity) will kill everything in your pond, high pH (pond water alkalinity) will mostly just make them uncomfortable. Symptoms of low pH in your water include (but are not limited to); “slimier than usual” fish skin, overall lethargy, clamped fins and surface piping (breathing at the surface). I recommend you keep a box of baking soda on hand for emergencies. It is just sodium bicarbonate, so it should not injure your fish if applied properly, but it will increase the pH levels of you garden pond very quickly, preventing a huge catastrophe.

Also remember the easiest method of maintaining your ponds pH is to keep it as clean as possible. Remove the leaves and sticks as they fall in to limit debris breakdown and keep your water circulating!

Hydroponic gardening is a great way to reap the benefits of healthy, wholesome food, while avoiding many of the challenges of traditional outdoor gardening. Hydroponic gardens are easy to start and often, the most difficult part of the process is getting things up and running. You will need to purchase appropriate lighting like a HPS ballast or lamp ballast and ensure your container is water-tight and capable of holding the plants you plan to cultivate. You will also want a space for your garden that is away from the daily routine of your family in order to protect the tender seedlings as things begin to bloom. The materials needed for hydroponic gardening are affordable and easy to find, but working with a company you can trust often makes the start-up process easier.

One of the best things about hydroponic gardening is the ability to do it year-round, regardless of the climate in which you live. Hydroponic gardens are protected from the elements and you control the temperature and exposure, so you can grow fresh, healthy vegetables during the dead of winter, no matter where you live. Even produce purchased from the supermarket is not this fresh and nutritious.

Hydroponic vegetables are more nutritious than produce found elsewhere. This is because you are in complete control of the nutrition content of the environment. When you plant seeds in the soil in your backyard, the seeds and plants will be exposed to the contamination and pollution in the soil. Even in raised bed or container gardens where you use fresh, clean soil, your plants will be exposed to pests, animals and contaminated rain and hose water. In a hydroponic garden, you control the nutrients and you have the ability to create the healthiest produce possible.

Bringing hydroponic gardening into your home will make the space feel better, just as plants improve the quality of your living space, so will a full-fledged hydroponic garden. Imagine looking out your window and seeing nothing but gray winter skies and snow-covered fields. Even if your hydroponic garden is small, it offers some greenery during the dead of winter. The brightly colored plants and vegetables will enliven your living space and make you feel good about life. Just as you crave sunlight and warmth in the cold winter months, so will your garden. Together, you can reap the benefits of good health, warmth and growing, even if nothing is happening in your yard or outdoor space.

One reason people choose hydroponic gardening is their concern for survival. Regardless of what happens in the world, you will have access to healthy, affordable foods, right in your own home. If a world crisis occurs and prices of foods soar, you will be growing your own food for just the cost of start-up of the garden. If something occurs in the environment that sacrifices the health of the foods available to you, your hydroponic garden will still provide plenty of great produce. If weather conditions destroy a crop of a particular vegetable, your hydroponic garden will be protected from the elements and you will still be able to enjoy the nutritious benefits of that product.

Brad Carver recently started purchasing lighting supplies such as HPS ballast online because of the convenience. She ordered lighting supplies such as lamp ballast online for her office.

How To Combat Garden Pests

Author: KelleyWilson

It is a good idea to learn about garden pests most common in your area. This is the only way to keep your plants safe. By learning the signs left behind on your plants, you can often know what is ailing them by the evidence you find and finding the appropriate pesticide to combat any infestation. Some conditions can make your garden susceptible to infestation of lawn pests, such as inadequate drainage.

One way a lawn pest can harm a plant is by sucking nutrition from them. This will inevitably destroy their leaves, stems, roots, and buds. Some common garden pests are slugs, snails, mites and grasshoppers. A large infestation of grasshoppers can completely destroy a lawn because they will devour the stems, grass, vegetables, leaves and fruit.

Another common pest is called a spider mite. It is indigenous to North America and attacks both indoor and outdoor plants. This is an extremely destructive types of lawn pests. Keep an eye on your plant leaves, as spider mites live on the underside of leaves and feed off the leaf tissue, sucking away the plants nutrients. If you notice light colored dots on your leaves, these could be the feeding marks left behind. As the feeding continues, the leaves will turn yellow, dry up, and fall off. These garden pests are common in dry and hot conditions. An interesting thing to note is that they go through 3 molting stages. After the first molting stage they are called nymphs and have 8 legs. After mating, it is possible to produce up to 300 eggs over a couple of weeks. From egg to adult takes five days, which is very rapid reproduction, thus you can have a rather large infestation quickly.

There are others that are found on the underside of leaves as well. Whiteflies are another troublesome pest. They are found in large groups, and are also are sap-sucking insects. These garden pests are quite destructive creatures. They secrete honeydew, so leaves will be sticky, or covered in a black, sooty mold. There are 250 vegetable and ornamental plants that are among the host plants for these pests. Whiteflies reproduce rapidly as well, with 200 to 400 eggs being laid, and they go from eggs to adults in 25 days at room temperature. They have a life span of one to two months.

Ladybugs are great to have in your garden. Their food of choice is aphids. Aphids will destroy a plant right before your eyes. It is said that you can mix a bit of soda pop and water together and lightly spray the ladybugs. This makes the wings slightly sticky and wont open for them to fly away for a minimum of about a week. This will keep them around to feast on your menacing pests a little longer. You can keep ladybugs in the refrigerator for up to a few weeks releasing a few at a time. Just make sure you don’t freeze them. Ladybugs will live up to a year.

Garden pests vary in size from deer, rabbit, squirrels, on down to micro pests. There are so many different pests that can attack your gardens. This is the reason you need to identify which pest to target. There are many forms of treatment for your garden, depending on the pest you have. If you contact a professional sales person, they can give you all the options available for your specific problems. Remember, the more information you can gather on the pest in your garden, the better chances of ridding your yard from them.

The professional sales person can help you determine if the pest you have are beneficial for your plants and flowers, as some garden visitors are actually natural helpers. They will also give you advice on whether or not you should plant some companion plants or flowers to help maintain a your garden.
