I am going to share with you a story about a woman who was taught by her mother on how to knit baby clothes and how she passed on her knowledge on skills to her children and children’s children.

When my grandmother was still on her prime, she would knit baby clothes to each of her children. Her children would always wonder, what makes so special about knitting? And every time she would answer them that knitting is provides a nice personal feeling for her, especially when she sees the knitted clothes worn by her children.

When I was a small kid, my grandmother taught me how to crochet. As soon as my plump little fingers could hold the needle without harming myself, she made no delay on teaching me how to knit. By the time I was six and grandma sights were already failing, she made me thread the needles for her.

At eight years old, my mother knitted a complete spring wardrobe for me. I specifically remember the items she knitted particularly that red trimmed handkerchief. She would sit on a corner and spend most of her time knitting my clothes. I can even remember up to now, the assortment of colors she used and the patterns came from my grandma which my mom used on the clothes she made for me.

I agree and would attest that there is indeed something special in handmade clothing. It goes beyond the designs used, the colors, and quality of the work. It seems there is something really magical that made me feel special every time I put them on. Maybe because I knew that every stitch and knot was lovingly made for me and my brothers.

So, when I got married and got pregnant with my first child, I felt the urge to knit baby clothes for my little one. I started planning out what clothes my baby would wear when she comes home from the hospital and started knitting. The problem is, the moment I started it was very difficult to stop. Knitting became endless for me.

Making clothes for our children is more than just being able to save money or design clothes that we would want our babies to wear. It is our way of showing our love to them.

As the years go by, I continued to sew, knit and crochet clothing for my kids. They have a wide variety of knitted items on their closet, dresses, blankets, hats, sweater, and even pants for each one of them. I never stopped knitting with love for them. Sometimes, I even wondered if this hobby is going out of hand, and I almost gave up on it when I came across something that tells me that I shouldn’t.

Recently I paid a visit to my 22 year old daughter. I saw the sweater I knitted for her draped onto her favorite teddy bear. The teddy bear was placed on top of her dresser. On her table was a blanket I made for her.

My 19 year old boy is now all grown up and lives on his own. Though there are items that he left in the house when he moved out, he never left the knitted blanket I made for him which he was wrapped in it on our way home from the hospital after my giving birth. He even creates clothes for himself which mostly are patches and other strange designs which I couldn’t figure out.

My 15 year old put away her party dress which I made for her when she was just six months old. And guess what where I found it? I found it neatly folded on her precious little treasure box, which contains special items that mean a lot to her.

My 2 boys, one is a 10 year old and the other is 12, has kept the blankets that I used to wrap them when we came from the hospital after my delivery. It became their favorite blankets.

So you see all the hard work and long hours of knitting eventually paid off. When they grow up to become parents and have families of their own, I sincerely hope that they will be able to pass on the knitting tradition and the story that goes with it to their children and their children’s children.

Candles have been being used as far back as before the Middle Ages and were used not only for the visual appeal that is the reason for many of us using them today. Soap making, is fast catching on, as a hobby. You can throw together a batch of soap that is personalized for your taste and preference. If you make a mistake, you don’t need to toss your soap-making efforts and start from scratch. Use this guide on how to rebatch soap and rescue your homemade soap creations.

Break down the soap. Breaking soap into the smallest pieces possible is the first step in remaking soap. Employ a manual scraper or an electric blender if it is devoid of moisture and too hard. Cut the soap into small pieces if it is fresh and not fully dry.

When to ‘fix’ your soap. It is imperative to know at what stage to fix your soap if there was a problem with how you made it. You will need to remember to add the right ‘fix’ to your soap during the right stage. When you liquefy it the soap, for example, you must add oil or water at this stage and fragrance should be added after the soap is heated.

Return your soap to a liquid form. To repair an error in your homemade soap, start by melting it. To help liquefy your soap bits you can use plain water. Some prefer to use milk (whichever you use does not matter at all – but mild does seem to leave the soap smoother after melting). Put enough liquid in your soap so that it is wet but not too liquid. Make sure each piece of soap is wet enough to help it return to a smooth texture. The smooth texture is what you need when remaking it, and will determine how smooth your final soap product is.

Melting the soap. When you have diluted your soap and let it absorb adequately, (several hours at least), the next stage is to get your crock pot or slow cooker to melt the soap. Once the soap is softened and grated, place it in a crock pot with a secure lid. Make sure the lid is on good and tight and then put your crock pot on low for about an hour. After an hour, stir and mash the mixture using a potato masher. It will probably look like applesauce at this point. Keep heating in the crock pot for another hour. Keep checking back every hour or so until the soap is all the same consistency, mostly see-through, and complete liquid. A completely softened consistency is okay. All together it should take about 4 hours for your soap to reach the point where it can be poured.

Make sure to create your soap as soon as possible. Now that the mixture is able to be poured, you can pour it into a mold. Spoon it out of your crock pot and pour it into a mold. While the soap sets into all parts of the mold, keep tapping the mold; to avoid the formation of air bubbles. Soap that is re- made, should be left in the mold for 24 hours. It should then be easy to pop out of the mold. That is the final thing you’ll need to do in order to rebatch soap. It’s now ready to use.

1. A clean and organized painting space allows more time to be creative. Once an idea comes to mind you can run with it. Search out examples of items, vistas, etc. It takes time and patience to put together a cohesive vision. 2. In order to be ready to paint, brushes must be clean and in good condition. Keep the worn brushes for scruffy work. Keep the brushes clean by using a good brush cleaner for acrylic paint. Do not let the dirty brushes soak in the cleaning solution above the ferule (the metal part holding the brush hairs together) as the glue weakens the bristles.

3. It is easier to find the brush needed if the brushes are organized by size and type. Separate the brushes into containers based on good condition, well used and scruffy. Keep your brushes either by brand and size or by type of brush and size. Old, scruffy brushes should be kept as they often are needed to add texture to the surface area.

4. Organization is key to knowing where each supply is located. Palettes, rulers, palette knives, sponges and etc need to have a place where they can be retrieved easily. Mark the drawers or containers with the appropriate labels. Each drawer or container should have ample room to keep the supplies well organized. Always when using the last of a product keep a list of the product so you can replenish the item. Always return any of the supplies back to the drawer or container so the items can be easily located.

5. Organize your paints. Paint racks or drawers will keep the paint bottles or tubes organized by company and or color. When a paint tube or bottle is empty make a list by company and color. Keep the list in visual site on a clip board as this will make it easy to replenish the exact colors of paint needed.

6. When beginning a painting project first work out the project in your mind. List the order of the layers you will be doing. Start from the background forward, then the mid-ground and finally the foreground. It is important to paint all the furthest items and then work forward. Make a checklist of the furthest back elements, then the middle elements and finally the nearest elements.

7. Visit museums, aquariums and parks for inspiring new ideas. A simple walk will often times bring out new ideas and thoughts that have been buried away. Also it is a good idea to sit with a drawing pad and pencils and just go outside and begin to draw nature, people and buildings. This will often times bring on new ideas and visions.

8. Build a library of photographs. Take pictures of trees, clouds, buildings, mountains and much more. Your photographs are a great source for inspiration. Incorporate elements from your pictures and from books into your painting.

9. Look through magazines as they have wonderful ideas and picture’s of natures beauty. Build a reference library that can be referred to quickly. This reference library should be kept in an orderly manner. Each genre of pictures should be kept together. Any notebook will help in keeping the pictures orderly and in clear plastic sleeves.

10. Enjoy painting, enjoy the process… let the creative ideas blossoms. Look around for inspiration from the colors of the trees to the beauty of a child’s face to the simplest piece of fruit. Wherever you go there are new and wondrous ideas. Keep looking and keep being inspired by all the beauty that our world has to give us.

What type of art do you prefer? When selecting wall decor for the rooms of your home, choosing specific pieces can seem like a daunting task. So many styles of decor have existed throughout the history. One of the most common and fascinating types, is abstract one. When we think of it, we tend to think of paintings and sculptures. However, a wide variety of mediums can feature abstract art. However, a wide variety of mediums can feature it.To have a better appreciation for abstract art, we should understand precisely what it is.

The range of meanings of abstract art can be quite broad. However, a precise definition would be: types of Western art of the 1900s, which: A) discard representation and B) have no starting points or finishing points within nature. It is important to note that it is completely a modern form. The reason is that the art itself is abstract. In other words, the abstraction is not based on a particular object or nature itself.

When did Abstract Art begin? Towards the end of the 1800s, artists began to reject the idea of art reproducing objects and nature. During this period, several young American painters, such as Georgia O’Keeffe, began to experiment by using new artistic styles. Between World War I and World War II, Abstract Art continued to grow. In fact, by the 1930s it had become Western art’s most typical attribute.

After World War II, the art form Abstract Expressionism had been born in the United States. In fact, it was greatly impacting American and European sculptures and paintings.

In the 1950s, the Minimalism became the primary catalyst of Abstract Art. Some of today’s abstract wall art portrays this artistic style. This form was simpler and less personal than its previous variations. Within time, its focus developed into exploring the connection between forms and colors. By the dawn of the 21st century, art forms such as conceptual and figurative art had become as significant as Abstract Art.

Which sculptures should we consider as modern? Ironically, modern in the world of art, can refer to artists, artworks, and styles that have been popular during the past decade or even century. Much of today’s wall art resembles contemporary styles. People may one day consider the works of these artists as classics, in the same sense that Medieval, Baroque, and Renaissance sculptors are today. Here are some of the most renowned modern sculptors:

1. Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957)

Brancusi was a Romanian sculptor who made France his home. In the 1900s, Brancusi refined sculpture as an art form. While he showed the basic beauty of sculpture, he also attached an aura of mystery to it. Brancusi attended various art schools before creating Ecorche(1902), which Bucharest’s medical school still uses as a model. The works of Auguste Rodin greatly influenced Brancusi, teaching him that a force within a sculpture creates its surface. Within time, Brancusi would use a somewhat minimalist approach, attempting to represent sculptures in their most basic form.

2. Naum Gabo (1890-1977)

Born in Russia, Gabo later became an American. During World War I, Gabo lived in Norway and began developing his stereometric method of sculpting. This approach would ultimately influence some of today’s wall sculpture art. Gabo’s first sculptures were Cubist, and utilized the materials of celluloid and sheet metal. He would continue to use interesting materials, including plastic, wire, and glass. The goal was to create an impression of movement.

3. Ivan Mestrovic (1883-1962)

Mestrovic was a Croatian-American sculptor who once worked as a shepherd. Classic Greek Auguste Rodin sculptures greatly influenced Mestrovic’s typically huge and serious works. Mestrovic often used materials such as bronze, marble, and wood. Common subjects that Mestrovic used included:

- Yugoslav history

- Yugoslav folklore

- churches

- Biblical scenes

4. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

Picasso began to demonstrate his artistic skills as a young painter. Very quickly, he became renowned worldwide for his original and abundant painting. Although Picasso mainly used the medium of painting, he also used other media, such as sculptures. Other sculptures also influenced Picasso’s paintings. For instance, Iberian (far southwestern Europe) sculpture contributed to the style Picasso used in his painting Portrait of Gertrude Stein (1906). African sculpture also influenced Picasso’s use of Cubism.

5. Auguste Rodin (1840-1917)

Rodin’s works were quite visionary and have certainly inspired some of today’s wall sculpture art. The Frenchman perceived the materials of his sculptures as objects that required shaping, in order to create different effects on the surface. Rodin also perceived his sculptures as pieces of material that existed in space. He made an important trip to Italy, during 1875. There, the works of masters such as Michelangelo and Donatello amazed Rodin. Rodin’s first major sculpture, The Age of Bronze was so realistic that experts wrongly believed that Rodin had used a mold of a living human!
